The House Committees on Health and Judiciary have been charged to lead a process that would result to the enactment of a law that seeks to provide employment opportunities, inclusion and support for people living with disabilities.
Plenary took the decision Thursday, February 12, 2026 during the 10th day sitting of the first quarter of the 3rd session of the 55th Legislature.
The decision was prompted by the submission of an Act titled: “An Act to Provide for the Inclusion, Employment and Support of Persons with Disability within the Republic of Liberia, 2026” by Montserrado County Electoral District 1 Representative, Rugie Yatu Barry.
In her bill, the Montserrado County lawmaker craved the indulgence of her colleagues to pass into law, an act that would provide equal space for people living with disabilities despite their physical condition.
She pointed out that the sole purpose of this bill is to provide support, employment opportunities as well as equal protection for persons with disability in order to reduce the high level of poverty amongst these minority or marginalized group.
“As you may be aware, persons with disability in Liberia are grossly being discriminated, deprived of learning and employment opportunities and other social services due to their condition, which is a violation of their fundamental human rights,” stated Rep. Barry.
“Therefore, I respectfully request that this august Body kindly endorse the passage of this proposed bill as part our commitment to serving the Liberian people without discrimination,” added the bill.
Following the reading and subsequent deliberation on the proposed law, a motion was proffered and endorsed for it to be sent to the House’s Committees on Health and Judiciary to report to full plenary within two weeks.
Expanding further on the matter during a brief news conference, Rep. Barry indicated that the passage of this bill into law will in turn reduce the dependency of people with disabilities, most of whom are living in abject poverty.
“This bill is for the good of all of us. We need to cater to these people by creating an enabling space for employment, inclusion and support. Remember that if we fail to do this, we are made to cater to them indirectly.”
Most importantly too, Rep. Barry also support proposal for reserved seats for people from this community as a means of creating balance in the Legislature.
