Africa-Press – Liberia. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai will, on Thursday, formally dedicate a €7 million food safety facility and launch the newly restructured Liberia Standards Authority (LiSA), marking a major step toward strengthening Liberia’s quality control and consumer protection systems.
The refurbished headquarters, funded by the European Union through the Liberia Food Safety Initiative, is intended to enhance national capacity for food testing, standards enforcement, and conformity assessment.
The project was implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization in partnership with Liberian authorities.
However, the modernization includes advanced laboratories, restored testing infrastructure and upgraded workspaces designed to improve monitoring of food and consumer goods on the local market. The facility is expected to reduce the circulation of unsafe and substandard products while boosting confidence in Liberian exports.
The project also introduced hybrid energy systems, including solar power and a backup generator to ensure uninterrupted operations, as well as a newly drilled borehole to provide a 24-hour water supply. Structural rehabilitation covered roofing, interior reconstruction and installation of specialized laboratory equipment.
During the ceremony, President Boakai will unveil Liberia’s first National Quality Mark and endorse LiSA’s Five-Year Strategic Plan covering 2025 to 2029.
The plan, launched recently by the authority, outlines accreditation pathways, regulatory expansion, and strategies to align Liberia with international standards.
