Liberia Justice Ministry Probes Prison Video Leak

Africa-Press – Liberia. The Ministry of Justice has opened an immediate investigation into a leaked video from Monrovia Central Prison that officials say violated the rights of inmates and may have breached prison regulations.

The footage, widely circulated on social media, reportedly shows Justin Oldpa Yeazeahn, known publicly as Prophet Key, interacting with other inmates inside the prison shop.

The Supreme Court sentenced Prophet Key to six months in prison for criminal contempt. The Court declared: “His conduct in spewing out invectives, insults, abuses, and indecent language constitutes a violation of the constitutional right to freedom of expression.”

Beyond the six-month custodial sentence—180 calendar days—the Court imposed additional conditions.

Prophet Key must publish a letter of apology to the Supreme Court and to all Liberians, especially Liberian women, in three widely circulated newspapers for five consecutive days; execute and file a behavior bond with the Clerk of the Supreme Court pledging never again to use invectives, vulgar language, profanities, or abusive speech against any Liberian.

However, during the week, video footage surfaced on social media of Prophetkey and ex-President Charles Taylor’s son in a bar in the Monrovia prison. The Ministry, in a statement, says the recording raises serious concerns about discipline and security within Liberia’s correctional system.

“The integrity, discipline, and security of Liberia’s correctional facilities are essential to maintaining public trust and upholding the rule of law,” the Ministry said in a statement Sunday.

Officials emphasized that the inquiry will be “full and transparent,” noting that investigators have been directed to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident without delay. “The investigation will be thorough, impartial, and conducted without delay,” the statement added.

The Ministry underscored that accountability will be pursued regardless of the individuals involved. “No individual, regardless of status, affiliation, or public profile, is above the law,” the statement read. “If the investigation finds that prison regulations or the law were violated, the Ministry will pursue appropriate administrative, civil, or criminal actions against all persons found culpable.”

Beyond the immediate probe, the government pledged to strengthen oversight mechanisms within the correctional system. “In addition to pursuing accountability in this case, the Government will review existing oversight and compliance mechanisms within the correctional system and will strengthen procedures where necessary to prevent recurrence,” the Ministry said.

The incident has sparked public debate over prison management and transparency in Liberia. The Ministry’s response signals a broader effort to reinforce standards across correctional institutions.

“The Ministry of Justice remains resolute in its commitment to enforce the laws of the Republic of Liberia and to ensure that all correctional institutions operate within established legal and ethical standards,” the statement concluded.
