House throws out Labor Officials

Africa-Press – Liberia. The House of Representatives on Tuesday expelled three senior officials from the Ministry of Labor, citing their unpreparedness to present the required information.

The officials appeared on behalf of their boss, Minister Cooper Kruah, who had been summoned to present statistical and empirical data on alien registration and to explain the impact of the recent increase in work permit fees for foreign workers from US$1,000 to US$3,000.

However, during the presentation, Deputy Minister for Administration Othello P. Mansou failed to make a convincing case, prompting House members to express strong dissatisfaction with the officials’ inability to provide comprehensive figures, credible analysis, or supporting documentation.

Lawmakers said the officials failed to adequately account for trends in alien registration or demonstrate how the steep fee hike is affecting foreign workers, employers, and government revenue. Several representatives described the presentation as lacking data-driven evidence and falling short of the Legislature’s expectations for oversight hearings.

Margibi County District #2 lawmaker Ivar K. Jones made a motion for the officials to leave, gather all relevant information and documents, and return on Thursday of this week.

The Minister of Labor was asked to present evidence, deliver a comprehensive briefing based on verifiable data on efforts to reduce the influx of foreign workers, address the qualifications of Liberians, and provide statistics and empirical data on alien registration.

Those asked to leave the Chamber were Othello P. Mansou, Deputy Minister for Administration, Jackson F. Wolobah, Assistant Minister for Statistics and Research, and Raphael E. Donokolo II, Assistant Minister for Alien Registration.
