Africa-Press – Liberia. The House of Representatives has summoned authorities of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) to appear before the full Plenary on Thursday, February 26, 2026. The invitation follows a recent fire incident at the Joe Bar Substation in District #5, Montserrado County, which reportedly caused significant fear and panic among residents in the surrounding Town Hall community.
The House’s decision came on Tuesday, February 24, after receiving a communication from Montserrado County District #5 Representative, Prescilla Abram Cooper. Representative Cooper requested the appearance of the LEC Managing Director, his principal deputies, and relevant technical officers to address lawmakers on the incident, which occurred on the night of February 16, 2026.
Rep. Cooper emphasized that the fire raised serious concerns regarding operational safety standards, maintenance protocols, emergency preparedness, and preventive mechanisms at substations across the country. She noted that substations are critical national infrastructure and that any malfunction threatens lives, property, and public confidence in Liberia’s utilities.
The Representative further requested that Plenary be comprehensively briefed on preventive and safety measures at substations, inspection schedules, technical details of the Joe Bar incident, emergency response adequacy, corrective actions taken, insurance coverage, and community safety programs.
It can be recalled that on the night of February 16, 2026, a massive fire broke out at the LEC substation in Joe Bar, Paynesville, leaving sections of the city without electricity for several hours.
