Africa-Press – Liberia. The Liberia Cement Corporation (CEMENCO) Tuesday launched a block-making training as part of its corporate social responsibility and interest to empower unemployed Liberians. The training, named Cement Academy, was launched by Vice President of Liberia Chief Jewel Howard-Taylor.

VP Taylor admonished CEMENCO for its farsightedness in being a partner to the collective development of Liberia through the empowerment of unemployed Liberians and the development of Liberia.

Meanwhile, CEMENCO’s Managing Director, William Gaihnard, said the Cement Academy is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility and support to the pro-poor agenda for prosperity and development in all parts of Liberia’s 15 counties.

“Today, in the presence of Her Excellency Madam Vice President of Liberia, who is the Godmother of this new social activity of Cemenco, we are officially launching this project,” he said.

According to him, the cement academy is aimed at empowering unemployed Liberians by providing them with a hands-on-training in block making that will empower them and make them self-sufficient.

“We want to be able to create with young unemployed Liberians in the different counties, an entrepreneurial opportunity, and the idea is to be able to rehabilitate healthcare centers, school classes, water access points, in short, to provide aid in disadvantaged regions to eradicate as far as possible, conditions precarious lives.

“The role of Cemenco, through its Corporate Social Responsibility, is to be able to develop humanitarian, social, environmental and charitable actions and we have always tried to create a strong and lasting link with the surrounding communities, with always more or less success and recognition, and after consultation with our committee, we have decided to extend our actions to the entire Liberian territory.

“This is why, after joint discussions with the authorities of Liberia, we will be present in the 15 counties of Liberia, and a selection of villages would be made by the CSR committee of Cemenco, in relation with some local authorities.

“We will provide a detailed annual report to the Minister of Internal Affairs, to demonstrate our deep commitment to communities and villages to ensure sustainable development for future generations.”

He said each county with funding from CEMENCO will produce its own block through the Cement Academy and each block made will be turned over to the authorities in that part of Liberia.”
