Africa-Press – Liberia. Teachers at Light International School are said to be living in fear after the sudden raid and deportation of seven of its foreign staff and two children. Up to press time on Sunday, there had been no explanation as to why the foreigners were deported and who carried out the raid. The Liberia Immigration Service and the Ministry of Education say they were unaware of the operation.
Speaking to FrontPageAfrica on condition of anonymity, a staff of the school said “We don’t know who did what they did, what is the reason; it is through the same newspaper and social media that we got to know that they were deported – this is the issue we have”.
was informed that that deported include the principal and general manager, Roman Mamedov, head of primary section, Mrs. Mamedov; English teacher and accountant, Elvin Rahimov; Mrs. Rahimov; Moral Education Teacher and Vice President for Administration Mehmet Simsek; Mrs. Ramazan. Ceray, Esma, a little girl in 6th grade and Enest, a boy in pre-primary section.
The school’s local staff has been asked by the board to run the school which was heavily controlled by the foreign staff. also gathered that not all the deported foreign staff are from Turkey, some were from Azerbaijan.
“Since that incident, the kind of movements we see around the school and what we are hearing is making us afraid. We need some explanation,” the staff said. The staff confirmed that those foreigners taken away from Liberia were taken to an affiliate school, Galaxy International School, in Accra, Ghana.
While the information on the why these foreign staff were deported, it can be recalled that in 2017, the Foreign Minister of Turkey, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, during a one-day visit to Liberia said the school does not represent the interests and aspirations of the Government and people of Turkey. He, therefore, appealed to the Government of Liberia to remove the management (at the time) of the school.
His call to the Liberian government came barely a year after the failed coup in Turkey which was linked to the founder of the Light International School in Liberia and schools in many other countries by the Turkish government.
