Africa-Press – Liberia. A delegation of students from the Nigeria Armed Forces Command and Staff College on November 25, 2025 visited the Headquarters of the Liberia immigration Service (LIS) as part of a research exercise on “Harnessing Community-Led Security for Enhanced National Security”.

The visit, which is aimed to gather firsthand information on Liberia’s border management system, featured a detailed presentation led by Controller Chea Nelson, Chief of Office Staff in the office of the Commissioner General.

Mr. Nelson briefed the delegation on the LIS’s core and duties, including regulating the entry and exit of people, supporting national revenue collection, and safeguarding border integrity while upholding the Alien and Nationality law of Liberia.

He noted that despite these responsibilities, the service faces major challenges due to Liberia’s porous and sea borders and limited resources to monitor all cross points.

According to Mr. Nelson, regular migrants often exploit these vulnerabilities making community involvement crucial.

He stressed that with Liberia’s 176 borders point, only 46 of which are manned, community – led security initiatives have become an essential addition to traditional border enforcement.

LIS Commissioner General, Elijah Rufus, welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to collaborating with regional institutions for the benefit of Liberia and West Africa.

Head of the delegation, Brigadier General E.A. Orakwe, expressed gratitude to the LIS leadership for the engagement, noting that the interaction had added significant value to the students’ research.
