SKD Floodlight Project Completion Expected in November

Africa-Press – Liberia. The long-awaited restoration of the floodlights at the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) Sports Complex, Liberia’s only international-standard sports stadium, has officially commenced, marking a significant milestone for the country’s sports development.

According to Deputy Sports Minister for Sports, G. Andy Quamie the restoration of the floodlights at the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) Sports Complex is expected to be completed in the first week of November.

The project is being spearheaded under the leadership of Minister of Youth and Sports, Cllr. Jeror Cole Bangalu, whose visionary approach to sports infrastructure has seen numerous initiatives aimed at revitalizing Liberia’s sporting facilities.

The restoration work is being executed by Greenfield Electrical Engineering Company, in partnership with Enschede OVI Group.

According to Westhof Hugo, Engineer and Director of Enschede OVI Group, the installation is progressing smoothly and is expected to be completed within a week if all goes according to plan.

“The new floodlights are state-of-the-art digital LED systems that meet FIFA’s international standard of 1200 lux, which is required for television broadcasting and hosting international football matches,” he told the Ministry’s media team.

Once completed, the SKD Sports Complex will once again meet global illumination standards, enabling Liberia to host night matches and other international sporting events. This restoration is seen as a major step in improving the country’s sports infrastructure and boosting its capacity to attract international competitions.

Sports enthusiasts and stakeholders have welcomed the project, emphasizing that the upgraded floodlights will enhance the viewing experience for fans and create new opportunities for Liberia on the global sports stage.

The SKD Sports Complex, located in Paynesville, outside Monrovia, remains a symbol of Liberia’s commitment to developing sports and providing world-class facilities for athletes and supporters alike.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Minister Quamie disclosed that once the installation is completed, night football will officially return to Liberia’s premier sports facility.

“We expect the installation of the floodlights to be completed by the first week of November. Once that’s done, night games will resume at the SKD Sports Complex,” Quamie said.

He further revealed that this year’s National County Sports Meet will include night matches, a development that has excited sports fans across the country.

“For this year’s County Meet, we will have night games. The first game will begin at 4:00 PM, and the second will kick off at 7:00 PM,” Quamie explained.

The Deputy Minister added that following the completion of the project, a special match will be organized to inaugurate the floodlights, with either President Joseph Nyuma Boakai or a designated official expected to grace the occasion.

“We are in discussions with Lofa and Nimba or other counties to play a test match to determine whether the lights meet international standards. The official date for the inauguration will be announced later,” Quamie noted.
