Africa-Press – Liberia. <\/strong><\/span>The Government of Liberia has rejected claims of a shortage of Liberia\u2019s staple [rice] and has informed the general public that there is absolutely no shortage of rice on the Liberian market, cautions against any form of panic buying.<\/p>\n

A release signed by Liberia\u2019s Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism, Ledgerhood J. Rennie has it that the current stockpile in various warehouses amounts to 181.493 metric tonnes. \u201cThis amounts to 7, 259,740 bags (Seven million, two-hundred and fifty-nine thousand, seven hundred and forty bags)\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Rennie, this current stockpile will last till September 12, 2022.<\/p>\n

Although he did not give a particular date but said some additional 37 thousand metric tonnes of rice is expected in his April, 2022.<\/p>\n

Rennie said, \u201cThe statement comes in the wake of a confusion that erupted on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 between rice distributors and some marketers following the reported refusal of distributors to sell their products.\u201d<\/p>\n

The misunderstanding stemmed from a small glitch in the distribution circle.<\/p>\n

The government clarifies that it continues to ensure the stabilization of the market price of the Liberian staple in order to avoid an increment in the cost, although the price has gone up on the international market.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the government urges politicians to avoid attempting to score political capital at the expense of the country\u2019s hard-earned peace. It also calls on all Liberians to play their part in the maintenance of the democratic course the country is now on.<\/p>\n
