Africa-Press – Liberia. <\/strong><\/span>The Liberian Senate on Tuesday voted to remove tenure of services from a few of the government institutions currently benefiting and maintain it only with those institutions that are integrity institutions.<\/p>\n

Unlike institutions including the National Elections Commission (NEC), the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), The General Auditing Commission (GAC), Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (LEITI), and The Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), the Public Procurement Concession Commission (PPCC), and the Internal Audit Agency (IAA) including the Liberia Human Rights Commission all other entities with tenures will be removed.<\/p>\n

Noticeable among entities to lose the tenure privilege is the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP). As part of the Senate\u2019s decision, they also voted to halt all confirmation proceedings for Presidential nominees who were appointed to entities that could be affected by the repealing of the act giving them tenure.<\/p>\n

As part of effecting the change, the Senate named an ad hoc committee chaired by Senator Varney Sherman of Grand Cape Mount County to unbundle the law, review and amend them individually.<\/p>\n

The Senate vote comes after the House of Representatives on November 22, voted in favor of a report from its Judiciary Committee repealing all tenured positions in government.<\/p>\n

In the House of Representatives version of the amendment, the only tenured positions at the General Auditing Commission (GAC), the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) and the National Elections Commission (NEC) \u2014 were recommended as exceptions. But all others have been scrapped and power returned to the President of Liberia.<\/p>\n

Positions including the Public Procurement and Concession Commission (PPCC), and the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) amongst others were affected by the House of Representatives\u2019 Tuesday decision.<\/p>\n

Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, Chairman of the House\u2019s Judiciary Committee said their reconsideration stands from what he described as \u201ca constitutional conflict these tenured positions are creating.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to him, previous legislatures didn\u2019t properly pass those tenured positions.<\/p>\n

How will NASSCORP be affected?<\/b><\/p>\n

Recently, The Liberian Senate has voted in agreement that a performance audit of the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) will be a key requirement for the confirmation of President George Weah two nominee for positions of Director-General and Deputy Director-General respectively.<\/p>\n

The senate reached the decision after the nomination letter of the two nominee was read on the floor of the Senate. The Public Account Committee of the Legislature has been tasked to perform the responsibility in collaboration with the Senate committee on Autonomous Agencies chair by Senator Emmanuel Pennue.<\/p>\n

Mr. Dewitt VonBallmoos and Carmerna C. Yeke were recently nominated as NASSCORP\u2019s Director-General and Deputy Director-General respectively.<\/p>\n
