Africa-Press – Liberia. <\/strong><\/span>The MoU between the Liberia Chamber of Commerce (LCC) and the Ministry of Labour, to provide 500 jobs for college graduates, is still on course, says Cllr. Oswald Tweh, President-elect of the trade organization.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an ongoing effort and is still on the table and we\u2019re working on it,\u201d he assured. Tweh, who was re-elected unopposed to helm of the LCC on July 5, was reacting to a release from the Minister of Labor complaining of the Chamber\u2019s failure to implement or honor the MOU \u2014 which was intended to provide jobs to the college or university graduates.<\/p>\n

On June 1, 2021, the government, represented by the the Ministry of Labour and LCC signed an MoU, which the trade organization committed itself to providing 500 jobs for college graduates. The MoU provides for the vigorous recruitment and screening processes which have been fully complied with by both parties, with technical support from the Human Resources Association of Liberia.<\/p>\n

However, Minister of Labour, Cllr. Charles Gibson said out of the nearly 7,000 applications received, 500 were shortlisted but none are being given jobs.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom that shortlist, 310 successfully participated in an employment ethics orientation, which was a requirement insisted upon by the Liberia Chamber of Commerce.\u201dThe final list for employment was submitted to the Chamber earlier this year, followed by several reminders via letters, WhatsApp messages and phone calls, but the Chamber is yet to revert to the office of the Minister with the list of job placements to absorb the first 310 job candidates,\u201d the Minister said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is regrettable and embarrassing not just to my office but for the reputation of Liberia Chamber Commerce. It was in reliance on your promise to provide the 500 vacancies for recent university graduates, as contained in the said MOU, for a minimum monthly salary of US$350, that we embarked on this employment scheme,\u201d Gibson added.<\/p>\n

Gibson noted it is wrong for the LCC to keep the hope of hundreds of job seekers in limbo after they have fulfilled all the requirements proffered by the LCC as contained in the said MoU for employment opportunity.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour prolonged silence on the issue makes it even more frustrating as not even one percent of the said vacancy has been provided,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
