Reporters, as individuals, inform the public about regional and international events. Reporters are a subset of journalists. Many journalists work as reporters, but not all reporters are journalists.<\/p>\n<p>Willie Tokpah of Front Page Africa and former Vice President of the Reporters Association of Liberia (RAL) was elected President beating Mark Mengonfia of the New Republic and former Secretary General of the RAL, 191 to 99 votes. Tokpah will steer the Association from 2023-2026.<\/p>\n<p>Reporter Henscin Dehgar of Truth FM Radio won the Vice President position with 188 votes, while Onesimus Garway got 102 votes. For the Secretary-General position, Augustine Saah of Truth FM Radio was elected with 159 votes, and his rival, Abraham Kollie received 127 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Bobby Tingba was elected as Assistant Secretary General with 157 votes while Korto Snowe had 115 votes. And Esther Johnson won unopposed as Financial Secretary. Tokpah said the new leadership hopes to focus on improving the welfare of reporters including the building of the website, and long-term structural goals among others.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, George D. Watkins, head of Political Affairs and Communication, on behalf of Dr. Bhofal Chambers, Speaker of the House of Representatives 54th Legislature, told delegates during the 2022 RAL Elective Congress, that getting the facts right is the cardinal principle of journalism.<\/p>\n<p>The 2022 RAL Congress keynote speaker said, \u201cthe work of a news reporter remains very cardinal, for it is the first instance in news-gathering in the journalism profession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Watkins intoned that the increasing practice of democracy in Liberia should not necessarily be placed to the credit of the State and its politicians, but also to the media. The media has played and is playing a very integral role in the country\u2019s information dissemination mechanism for news consumption, of and about, developments and happenings in Liberian society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, the Liberian media is experiencing a very high degree of freedom in the discharge of their respective reportorial duties. Under my stewardship, as Speaker of the 54th Legislature, I superintended the passage of a law that has decriminalized media offenses from all aspects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the passage of that law, in no way gives a carte blanche to wrongness in using the media for any reason thereof. Against this backdrop, the role of a media entity and its practitioners come into the spotlight. It is our understanding that media works, according to conventional practice, must account for truth-telling and timeliness. How a story is being told or reported still remains an ongoing concern for us, media product consumers, and I believe this is not unique to the Liberian scenario,\u201d Watkins said.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cIn a democratic society, Journalists promote news based on the popular opinion of the majority or the \u2018wisdom of the crowd\u2019.
