Africa-Press – Liberia. <\/strong><\/span>The Government of Liberia (GOL), through the Minister of Justice Counselor Frank Musa Dean has described former Indian Honorary Consul General to Liberia Mr. Upjit Singh Sachdeva as a \u201creliable partner and friend\u201d who is willing and committed to aid the government and Liberians in times of need.<\/p>\n

Mr. Sachdeva is commonly known as \u201cJeety\u201d in Liberia. He is the owner of Jeety Trading Corporation, premier in the sale of hardware of all kinds and Jeety Rubber Liberia Limited, which is under construction in Weala, Margibi.<\/p>\n

Minister Dean observed that Mr. Sachdeva, and the entire Indian Community in Liberia have been very helpful to the nation and its people.<\/p>\n

He made the observation when Mr. Sachdeva, along with other members of the Indian Business Chamber presented a huge consignment of food and assorted items for inmates at the Monrovia Central Prison on Friday, February 17.<\/p>\n

The items donated include: 200 bags of rice, 50 bags of beans, 15 cans of palm oil, 10 bags of salt, 10 cartoons of cube, and one bucket of chlorine.<\/p>\n

The presentation was in fulfillment of a commitment made by the Chamber, through its Founding Chairman \u201cJeety\u201d when he visited the Monrovia Central Prison to distribute hot cooked meal to inmates on Armed Forces Day, February 11.<\/p>\n

The gesture was made following a pronouncement made by Minister Dean that inmates were eating rice without soup at the prison facility when he appeared for public hearing on the draft national budget at the National Legislature recently.<\/p>\n

Minister Dean pointed out that the latest donation made by the Indian Business Chamber is not the first of its kind for improving the conditions of inmates at prison facilities across the country.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that the items donated will be distributed to some of the 16 prisons across the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are very pleased today to be receiving a visit of members of the Indian Business Chamber of Liberia. As you may know, this is not their first visit. They are a reliable partner and a reliable friend. They have come often to identify with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t forget inmates<\/b><\/p>\n

Minister Dean stated that those being incarcerated at prison facilities are citizens of Liberia and as such, they should not be forgotten.<\/p>\n

Though they have ran in conflict with the laws of the land, he added, that inmates are also entitled to certain basic needs, including feeding.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe encouraged all of our friends to copy the example of the Indian Business Chamber to donate, contribute or give to the less fortunate and to our prisons around the country. As I said this is not the first visit of the Indian Business Chamber-in fact, Jeety is called \u201cour father\u201d by the inmates around here. They know him and this donation will be very helpful. We have received these items and we will make sure that the inmates are fed and fed properly.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stressed that the Liberian government remain \u201cplease by this gesture and we ask other business friends of ours to follow suit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Making the presentation earlier, Mr. Sachdeva encouraged foreign entrepreneurs during businesses in Liberia not to forget about those who are being contained at various prison facilities across the country.<\/p>\n

He requested that portion of the items donated also be made to other prison facilities, including the Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to urge all my fellow businessmen in the Republic of Liberia-don\u2019t give to get, but give to inspire others because once you are outside, you can fetch for food. But when you are in here (prison), it is very difficult. We should buttress the efforts of the government in whatever little way they can do for these inmates to have a nourished meal.\u201d<\/p>\n
