Africa-Press – Liberia. <\/strong><\/span>Ahead of the ensuing presidential and legislative elections, claims and counter claims of political denials and betrayals are popping as evidenced by the latest accusation against Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe of reportedly begging former Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for mercy to guarantee his return to the Unity Party (UP).Senator Snowe supported Ambassador Boakai during the 2017 general and presidential elections. However, he was accused by some executives of the UP of disclosing sensitive information, including the party\u2019s campaign strategies to his closed ally President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who did not support Ambassador Boakai at the time.<\/p>\n

Senator Snowe has already endorsed the second term bid of President George Manneh Weah following his resignation from the UP.<\/p>\n

It was widely reported on the social media that Senator Snowe reportedly went down on his kneels asking Ambassador Boakai for mercy to return to the UP. He was also reported to have pleaded for the selection of Senator Jeremiah Koung as the running mate to the UP Standard Bearer.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Senator Koung, the Standard Bearer of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) is a close friend to the Bomi County Senator.<\/p>\n

Senator Snowe was reported to have made the move at a meeting convened by Ambassador Boakai for Senators Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence and Koung at his residence in Bomi over the week end.<\/p>\n

Shortly after the meeting, photos of Senator Snowe along with Senators Koung, Lawrence, NPP former Chairman James Biney, former UP Chairman Wilmot Paye, among others went viral on the social media<\/p>\n

But speaking when he appeared as guest on OK FM on Thursday, April 27, Senator Snowe disclosed that he phoned the son of former VP Boakai to make a stop at the residence of VP to greet him while he was in the county to hold a political meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI drove to his house and as soon as I got there, I was ushered in. As I was walking to him (Joe Boakai) he said, \u2018look Eddie, I know the text message I sent you wasn\u2019t a good message but you are my nephew, let\u2019s put it behind us and restore our former relationship because I know your relative.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Senator Snowe added that he shoke the hands of Ambassador Boakai and later held discussions with him on agriculture activities.<\/p>\n

He said the discussions held with the UP Standard Bearer were not based on his return to the party or to endorse his ambition as being perceived in the public.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t talk politics; he didn\u2019t ask me for political favor or assistance. We restored our cordial relationship and friendship and that\u2019s all. The next day I saw on facebook, Senator Snowe went to beg former VP Boakai and he lay down on the floor. If I had done that, I will say it. There was absolutely nothing of such. We didn\u2019t even talk on national politics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senator Snowe disclosed that he took the decision to greet Ambassador Boakai as a senior citizen while he was in the county after being informed by some of his colleagues that the UP Standard Bearer was in Bomi.<\/p>\n

He said though he and Ambassador Boakai was not in good term for quite long due to his support to President Weah for the presidency in the ensuing elections, he holds a strong relationship with the wife of the UP Standard Bearer and his son, Joseph Boakai, Jr.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe two people that were going to see the former Vice President (Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence and Jeremiah Koung)-I have a very personal and good relationship with them. I know he will be nominating one of them and when he nominates any of them, they will still be my friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not looking for favor<\/p>\n

Senator Snowe pointed out that his decision to pay a visit at the residence of Ambassador Boakai in the county was not to seek any political favor.<\/p>\n

He disclosed that the move was done on \u201ccordiality and respect.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the photos that went viral on the social media were taken and posted by unknown individuals after Senators Koung, Lawrence and the others shared jokes and discussions with him on agricultural activities at his house in Bomi.<\/p>\n

When quizzed whether political discussions were held among them, Senator Snowe responded: \u201cwe are politicians; we are not imams or Bishops. We talked politics, but people misconstrued couple of things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senator Snowe justified that though he supports President Weah second term bid, there was no \u201cbig deal\u201d for his friends paying a visit to him at his residence in Bomi shortly after he met with Ambassador Boakai.<\/p>\n

Not drawing lines<\/p>\n

He vowed not to \u201cdraw line in the sand of politics\u201d with his friends and others because of their different political affiliations even though he supports President Weah.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not looking for any political favor; those are my friends and I was very pleased for them coming around me. With all fairness, the former Vice President and I never talked about who to carry as his running mate. He never asked me and I never offered support.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senator Snowe used the occasion to disclose that he remains supportive and unbending of his support to the second term bid of President Weah.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am supporting President Weah. But this is what confuse me; when people think that I am with Mr. Weah, I should not be seen with Mr. X or I should not be seen with the former Vice President or I should not talk to Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence or Senator Jeremiah Koung.\u201d<\/p>\n

He, however, promised to drive to the home of the Liberian leader and also make pubic any decision to withdraw his support for his candidacy, adding that, \u201cuntil I can do that, you will not see it on Facebook.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senator Snowe further bragged that he wholeheartedly supported President Weah in 2014 for the senatorial seat of Montserrado County at the time many of those masquerading failed to do so.<\/p>\n

However, he added that, he didn\u2019t support President Weah or held discussion with him or any executive of his party in 2017 because; he made up his mind to support Ambassador Boakai at the time.<\/p>\n

The latest accusations levied against Senator Snowe and his clarifications come in the midst of possible political denials and betrayals ahead of the ensuing elections.<\/p>\n

Executives of various political parties, allies and confidantes are expected to announce shocking decisions to cross carpet from their various political institutions to endorse other political parties or politicians.<\/p>\n

The cross carpeting of politicians from one political parties to another few months to national elections is a normal routine in Liberia.<\/p>\n

However, some of the politicians contemplating on defecting are skeptical to be noticed or announced their political move for fear of being seen as \u201cbetrayers or belly-driven politicians\u201d during the early stage of the elections.<\/p>\n

But with barely few months to the conduct of political campaign activities, these politicians, some of whom are already holding closed door negotiations and meetings to guarantee their defections, will shockingly enter into new political marriages thereby betraying their closed allies, confidantes and political institutions for financial or other favors.<\/p>\n
