Africa-Press – Liberia. <\/strong><\/span>The Civil Society Human Rights Advocacy of Liberia, through its human rights monitors in Lofa County has described last Friday, September 29, violence in the county, as horrific and a threat to the peace and security of Liberia, especially in the wake of Presidential and Legislative Elections on next Tuesday, October 10, 2023.<\/p>\n

The group condemns both sides for their roles in the violence that has put Lofa County in a hotspot.<\/p>\n

At least two deaths have been officially confirmed from the violence that occurred last Friday between rival supporters of the ruling CDC and the opposition Unity Party with scores of others injured.<\/p>\n

The group calls for an independent and impartial investigation and prosecution of those responsible to serve as a deterrence in future campaign activities.<\/p>\n

The civil society community urges the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Justice to immediately disband all political party militant groups and allow state security to take over all security matters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also want to express our deepest condolences to victims\u2019 families including those undergoing medical treatment\u201d. It says.<\/p>\n

At the same time, it calls for respect for the rule of law and fundamental human rights and freedom during and after the elections across the country, stressing that violence-free, fair, transparent and credible elections will define Liberia\u2019s democracy and save the state. <\/b><\/p>\n
