Africa-Press – Liberia. <\/strong><\/span>The Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA) has issued a statement urging the National Elections Commission (NEC) to ensure the upcoming runoff election is conducted in a transparent and fair manner. The organization emphasizes the importance of respecting the will of the Liberian people and conducting constitutional elections to uphold democracy in the country.<\/p>\n

ULAA\u2019s interim president, Anthony F. Kpayea, highlights that a peaceful and credible election will demonstrate Liberia’s democratic maturity and stability to the international community. He stresses the need for the NEC to fulfill its responsibilities and ensure the election process is carried out accurately and ethically.<\/p>\n

As the organization prepares for its own democratic elections, the organization is committed to conducting a free and fair election for its leadership. The interim president assures members of the Liberian community in the United States that their voices will be heard and their votes will have an impact. He echoes the call for the NEC to conduct the runoff election in a careful and constitutional manner, mirroring the transparency being strived for in the United States.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe board and members have trusted us to lead the process, and we are prepared to conduct the elections in a free and transparent way that all our members will feel the impact of their votes cast, that\u2019s why we are calling on the NEC in our country to conduct the runoff election with care and respect the constitution as we are doing here in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

ULAA is a chapter-based organization representing Liberians residing in the United States, with eighteen chapters across the country. The organization\u2019s jurisdiction extends beyond the United States and includes North and South America, organized into four geographic regions. ULAA serves as an advocate for Liberians living in America and provides support, including legal help, when needed.<\/p>\n

The ULAA interim president also mentions that some former ULAA chapters have expressed an interest in returning to the organization to participate in the upcoming election. However, as they were not part of the previous discussion and decision-making processes, these chapters will not be involved in the voting process.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that tensions arose among the two presidential candidates and their supporters during the national convention in Philadelphia on September 16th, 2023, resulting in the cancellation of the election by the ULAA Board of Directors. The two candidates are Shiwoh Kamara, the incumbent President, and Mohammad Keita, an official of ULAA.<\/p>\n

Through its call for transparent elections and ongoing efforts towards reconciliation, ULAA is striving to ensure a credible and peaceful democratic process both within the organization and in the wider context of Liberia.<\/p>\n
