Africa-Press – Liberia. <\/strong><\/span>The Foundation for Community Initiative (FCI), in partnership with the European Union (EU) and the Ministry of Gender, has organized a meaningful roundtable dialogue on gender-based violence (GBV) in Liberia.<\/p>\n

This one-day event, held on December 8, 2023, at Corina Hotel in Sinkor, centered around the theme “Breaking the Cycle: Working Together to End Gender-Based Violence in Liberia.” The dialogue aimed to highlight the challenges faced in addressing GBV in Liberia and to explore innovative ways to prevent and solve these issues.<\/p>\n

Beatrice Newland, Regional Coordinator for the Enough! Project delivered the opening remarks, describing the gathering as a beacon of hope, determination, and collaboration in the fight against gender-based violence. Newland emphasized that GBV knows no boundaries and permeates all levels of Liberian society.<\/p>\n

She underscored the importance of taking unwavering action and fostering environments where every individual feels safe, respected, and empowered. The dialogue served as a platform for catalyzing change by sharing insights, perspectives, and experiences.<\/p>\n

Newland encouraged all participants to actively engage in the journey of collaboration and knowledge sharing. She urged them to embrace diversity and use their voices, experiences, and dedication to drive the change they seek. Recognizing the multifaceted challenges presented by GBV in Liberia, she called for sustained efforts and effective strategies to address these issues comprehensively.<\/p>\n

Anna Brzozowska, team leader of the Governance European Union Delegation in Liberia, emphasized the European Union’s core value of gender equality. She acknowledged that although progress has been made, the fight for gender equality remains a long and challenging journey.<\/p>\n

Brzozowska expressed the EU’s commitment to extending gender rights protection and shared their special gender action plan designed to promote equality until 2027.<\/p>\n

Alice Johnson Howard, Deputy Minister for Gender at the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, acknowledged that gender-based violence is a significant issue in Liberia, particularly affecting women and girls.<\/p>\n

She highlighted the prevalence of GBV in both urban and rural areas, encompassing various forms such as domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, human trafficking, and harmful traditional practices. Howard identified several contributing factors to GBV in Liberia, including deeply rooted patriarchal norms, economic inequalities, limited access to education, and the lingering effects of past civil wars.<\/p>\n

She stressed the need for ongoing advocacy, education, and legal reforms to create a safer environment for all citizens and provide support for survivors. In conclusion, addressing GBV requires sustained efforts from the government, civil society, and the international community. The dialogue served as a crucial step toward understanding the root causes of GBV and finding collaborative solutions to effectively combat this issue in Liberia.<\/p>\n
