Africa-Press – Liberia. <\/strong><\/span>A renowned Liberian broadcast journalist has called on emerging journalists to strive for professionalism as they go about honing their talents. Julius Kanubah, a presidential candidate of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), and former secretary general of the union, said journalists must adhere to the ethical standards of the profession and must seek truth in whatever to write and broadcast.<\/p>\n

Kanubah, who served as the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony of the Jonathan Paye-Layleh School of Journalism, told scores of graduates they must behave professionally, uphold freedom of speech and expression, and provide accurate information to the public.<\/p>\n

He highlighted the importance of professional journalists in shaping social, political, economic, and environmental transformation in Liberia. He emphasized that the graduates’ achievements extend beyond receiving a diploma.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have gained special skills and knowledge that they can now apply in the field of journalism, working with various media institutions to help make Liberia a better country,\u201d Kanubah said while emphasizing the crucial role of the media in facilitating the transfer of power and promoting peace and stability in Liberia.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to uphold professionalism within the media and you must adhere to ethical standards,\u201d he said. \u201cProfessional journalists must always seek and report the truth, as distorting information undermines professionalism.\u201d<\/p>\n

He spoke on the topic, \u201cThe Role of a Professional Journalist in the Media Center of Liberia. He stated that the role of the media in the transfer of power and transformation in Liberia has been critical for peace and stability in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cTransfer of power in this sense means we just concluded one presidential election in which we elected a new president, but we also elected members of the House of Representatives and Senators. The transfer of power in Liberia from one democratic leader to another democratic leader by country is enviable because it contributes to the processes of democratic consolidation in our country. The media have been a very huge part of this success,\u201d Kanubah said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Jonathon Pay-Layleh School of Journalism (JPSJ) in Monrovia, Liberia recently celebrated its third graduation ceremony, awarding diplomas to twenty-three aspiring journalists.<\/p>\n

The ceremony took place recently at the Christian Faith Mission Church in Paynesville. JPSJ aims to empower individuals with the skills and knowledge required to become professional journalists in Liberia, with a focus on contributing to the media landscape and providing quality information to the world.<\/p>\n

The school offers various courses, including news writing, introduction to journalism, radio and television production, health journalism, broadcast journalism, political reporting, public religion, news editing, and Adobe and video editing, among others.<\/p>\n

Kanubah commended the graduates for their significant experiences during their time at the school and expressed his hope that they would contribute to the media industry in Liberia.<\/p>\n

Wise Williams, the Jonathon Pay-Layleh School Journalism student council president, encouraged his fellow graduates to utilize the knowledge they have acquired and create opportunities for themselves.<\/p>\n

He urged them to serve as responsible journalists, uphold good behavior, and avoid sensationalism.<\/p>\n

Jamesetta Williams, a graduating student, saw the graduation ceremony as the beginning of their professional journey. She expressed gratitude to the institution and the teaching staff for equipping them with knowledge that will help them succeed and make a positive impact in society.<\/p>\n
