Boakai has released his second batch of cabinet appointments, including three outstanding women, pending Senate confirmation. These seven include: Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, Minister of Agriculture; Amin Modad, Minister of Commerce & Industry; Dr. Jarso Jallah Saygbe, Minister of Education; Dr. Louise Kpoto, Minister of Health; James Dorbor Jallah, Commissioner General, Liberia Revenue Authority; and Abraham Kromah, Director, Drug Enforcement Agency.

This new list brings to twelve the number of appointees so far. Also, from their academic and professional achievements, the President appears to have very high expectations of his cabinet.

Perhaps one of the most contentious names on this list is that of Sara Beysolow Nyanti, whose academic credentials have been brought into question. Regardless, Nyanti, a seasoned development expert, reached the pinnacle of her career when, in 2021, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appointed her as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in South Sudan, the world’s newest country. There, she led the UN’s efforts in recovery and stabilization. She held this position, equivalent to Assistant Secretary General, until her retirement in 2023. Nyanti is also a Baptist minister.

As a former international civil servant, Nyanti is expected to bring to the table her expertise to secure development opportunities for Liberia under the Boakai administration.

Coming to the Ministry of Agriculture is Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, an agricultural economist. He is currently a full-time consultant for the World Bank’s Food Security Crisis Preparedness Plan Development, Liberia.

Nuetah has also served for several years as an Assistant Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Liberia. Prior to these jobs, he worked with the United Nations World Food Programme as a Value Chain Food System Expert, a Program Policy Officer, and a Livelihood Consultant.

Nuetah holds a Master’s Degree in Regional Economics and a PhD in Agricultural Economics, both from the China Agricultural University. He also holds a certificate of completion from the Oriental Scholar Program on Governance, at China Peking University.

Amin Modad, tipped for the Minister of Commerce & Industry, is a hotel and food processing entrepreneur. He is the CEO of Bella Casa Hotel and Suites, founded in 2005, as well as CEO of Atlantic Foods Company, founded in 2015. He once served as a consultant at the Ministry of Commerce during the administration of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. He is chairman emeritus of the ruling Unity Party and a member of the Board of Directors of the African Methodist Episcopal University.

Modad obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Government from the University of Liberia and his Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Phoenix (Arizona, USA).

Dr. Jarso Jallah Saygbe, Minister of Education-designate, has a PhD in Higher Education Leadership from Delaware State University, USA. She is currently Associate Vice President, Academic Affairs-Student at Delaware State University. Prior to joining the faculty at Delaware State University, Dr. Saygbe served as Deputy Director General for Training and Manpower Development at the Liberia Institute for Publication Administration (LIPA). She also served as an academic advisor and adjunct faculty at the University of Rhode Island.

Dr. Louise Kpoto is President Boakai’s choice to take the helm at the Ministry of Health.

A respected medical doctor, fertility specialist, and public health expert, Dr. Louise Mapleh Kpoto has made an indelible impression on the nation’s health sector with her steadfast devotion to expanding healthcare services.

Dr. Kpoto’s academic journey reflects her dedication to mastering various facets of medicine. Holding a Doctor of Medicine from the A. M. Dogliotti College of Medicine at the University of Liberia, she furthered her expertise by obtaining a Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the University of Nairobi. She then pursued a PhD in Tropical Medicine from the University of Liverpool, making her a globally recognized authority in her field. Additionally, she earned a Master of Public Health from Tulane University’s School of Public Health, showcasing her holistic approach to healthcare.

Dr. Kpoto stands as the first Fertility Specialist in Liberia skilled in Advanced Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), a Merck Foundation Alumni. Her groundbreaking work in this area not only addresses a critical aspect of reproductive health but also positions Liberia at the forefront of modern fertility practices.

The name James Dorbor Jallah, Boakai’s choice to head the Liberia Revenue Authority, is no stranger to public service. Before joining The Carter Center as its Country Representative, he served as Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC).

Having earned a Bachelor of Science, Mathematics, and Physics from the University of Liberia, Jallah Matriculated to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a SPURS Certificate in Technology and Management and a Master of Engineering, Logistics, and Supply Chain Management.

Coming in as Boakai’s fourth security sector appointment is Abraham Kromah, Director-designate, Drug Enforcement Agency. Kromah, known for his strategic thinking and crisis management expertise, brings a wealth of experience to the nation’s security sector. Having served as Deputy Inspector General for Operations at the Liberia National Police during the Sirleaf administration, he was known for his rather intense approach to keeping a lid on armed robbery and other violent crimes. His track record suggests a commitment to community engagement and a focus on proactive policing. With Liberia in the throes of a drug abuse pandemic, threatening the lives of youth — and having experienced two successive drug busts that made global headlines — perhaps Boakai knew he needed Kromah’s proactive style to crack down on the scourge of drug abuse.

There you have it so far. Some names that are well known and some not so much, but every bit well qualified. Concerns that President Boakai may have ignored women in his first batch of appointments have been laid to rest with three outstanding and qualified individuals in three highly sensitive sectors — Diplomacy, Education, and Health.

For More News And Analysis About Liberia Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Liberia.
