Jonathan Fonati Koffa has urged the Liberian Government, particularly his colleagues in the Legislature, to do more to improve the lives of ordinary Liberians. He made this call in the aftermath of a devastating fire that engulfed his residence in Rehab Community, Paynesville, on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

Taking to his WhatsApp page after the incident, Speaker Koffa quoted a line from President John F. Kennedy\u2019s inaugural address, stating, \u201cIf a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.\u201d Reflecting on the loss, he remarked, \u201cWe are officially homeless. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n

During a press conference on Monday, Speaker Koffa emphasized the need for legislative efforts to address societal issues contributing to such tragedies. He recounted the harrowing experience of the fire and expressed gratitude that his family emerged unharmed. However, he stressed the broader implications, noting that until fundamental issues in society are addressed, such incidents will continue to pose risks.<\/p>\n

\u201cSadly, my family and I experienced a devastating fire last night. Over the past few months, many Liberians have also experienced fires that have resulted in tragic losses. Fortunately, none of my family members were harmed, and I am grateful for that. However, this incident serves as a reminder that these tragedies can happen to anyone, and until we address the issues in our society that lead to them, we cannot truly protect ourselves,\u201d the Speaker added.<\/p>\n

The fire, which completely destroyed the house, prompted swift responses from concerned neighbors, the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC), and a private water tanker. However, there was criticism over the delayed arrival of the National Fire Service, with Speaker Koffa highlighting the importance of timely responses and advocating for support and capacity building for the fire service.<\/p>\n

Addressing speculations about the cause of the fire, including substandard wires or a deliberate attack, Speaker Koffa clarified that investigations were ongoing, and he refrained from speculating on the motives behind the incident. He thanked his neighbors, fellow lawmakers, former President George Weah, and President Joseph Boakai for their support and solidarity during this challenging time.<\/p>\n

President Boakai, during a visit to the Speaker\u2019s home, expressed anticipation for the investigation\u2019s conclusion and subsequent recommendations for corrective measures, emphasizing the importance of ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future.<\/p>\n
