{"id":64889,"date":"2024-09-30T14:49:03","date_gmt":"2024-09-30T14:49:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/liberia\/all-news\/giant-martian-volcano-could-be-island-in-ancient-times-study"},"modified":"2024-09-30T16:19:25","modified_gmt":"2024-09-30T16:19:25","slug":"giant-martian-volcano-could-be-island-in-ancient-times-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/liberia\/all-news\/giant-martian-volcano-could-be-island-in-ancient-times-study","title":{"rendered":"Giant Martian Volcano Could Be Island in Ancient Times \u2013 Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Liberia. <\/strong><\/span>When dealing with the research, scientists looked at similar volcanos on Earth to get a better understanding of Olympus Mons, which is 624 km in diameter, roughly the same size as the US state of Arizona or Poland.<\/p>\n<p>The colossal Olympus Mons shield volcano located on Mars could once have been an island in an ancient ocean on the Red Planet, a new study has revealed.<\/p>\n<p>A team led by geoscientist Anthony Hildenbrand of Paris-Saclay University in France wrote that their research shows that Olympus Mons &#8211; the biggest volcano in the Solar System \u2013 \u201cshares morphological similarities with active volcanic islands on Earth where major constructional slope breaks systematically occur at the sea-air transition in response to sharp lava viscosity contrasts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We propose that the upper rim of the 6-kilometer high concentric main escarpment surrounding Olympus Mons most likely formed by lava flowing into liquid water when the edifice was an active volcanic island during the late Noachian\u2013early Hesperian,&#8221; the scientists added.<\/p>\n<p>The Noachian and the Hesperian are geologic systems and time periods pertaining to Mars, which approximately correspond to between <b>4.1<\/b> and <b>3.7<\/b> billion years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers finally discovered that the shorelines of these islands have sharp escarpments, similar to those that ring Olympus Mons. &#8220;This leads us to propose that Olympus Mons was a former volcanic island surrounded by liquid water,&#8221; the scientists pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>They stressed that the findings would help provide \u201cvaluable insights into the timing and fate of Martian Oceans\u201d and the history and evolution of the Red Planet on the whole.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About Liberia Follow Africa-Press<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Liberia.
