Africa-Press<\/a> – Liberia<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The Liberian economy\u202fis\u202fstruggling\u202fto recover from more than a decade of civil war.\u202fThe Ebola crises, and now the global COVID-19 pandemic, have\u202ffurther impeded\u202fthese efforts.\u202fGenerating employment for the\u202flarge population of young people in Liberia\u2014over 70 percent\u202fof the population is\u202fbelow the age of 35\u2014is\u202fcritical to ensuring\u202feconomic recovery and stability.<\/p>\n

A collaboration between IDA and the\u202fSwedish International Development Cooperation Agency is empowering poor and vulnerable youth to improve their income-generating potential.\u202fThe\u202fYouth Opportunities Project\u202f(YOP)\u202fprovides\u202flife, agriculture, and\u202fbusiness skills training. As many young people in Liberia lack\u202fbasic numeracy, literacy, and life skills, this training is vital to the country\u2019s economic recovery.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore joining YOP, I did not have any skills in doing business, but now I can manage a business and I can create income for myself and my family,\u201d\u202fexplains\u202fNinietta\u202fMulbah, a 29-year-old woman\u202fwho has benefitted from the program and now\u202fmanages\u202fa tailoring business.<\/p>\n

The project has reached nearly 15,000\u202fbeneficiaries\u202faged 15\u201335 years, 50 percent of whom are\u202fwomen. As a result of the communal farming initiative, more than 5,000 hectares of land across all 15\u202fcounties in Liberia have\u202fbeen\u202fcultivated with various food crops.\u202fNearly 3,000 young people in\u202furban areas\u202fhave benefited from business skills training and startup grants. And more than 600\u202fyouths\u202fhave\u202fcompleted apprenticeships in various trades with local businesses and master trainers.\u202f A\u202fyouth farming group in rural\u202fLofa\u202fCounty that benefitted from the YOP has been successful in its agriculture efforts, enabling it\u202fprovide\u202fsolar\u202felectrification\u202ffor\u202ftheir\u202fsmall\u202fvillage.<\/p>\n

One member and young mother,\u202fFatumata\u202fBility,\u202fsays she feels proud to be part of a group that worked hard to bring such development to her community.\u202fThe solar power project provides electricity to 64 homes in the village, streetlights, and power for the village meeting hall that is being used as\u202fa\u202fnight school for women and entertainment center for the entire village.<\/p>\n

To mitigate the impact of future shocks\u202fon the youth population, the project\u202falso\u202fsupported\u202fthe development of a safety net system. The\u202fcreation\u202fof management information, electronic registration, and payment systems\u202fhave allowed cash transfers to reach\u202fEbola-affected households\u202fand the extremely poor throughout the country.\u202fIt is a\u202fsafety net that is serving the most vulnerable well as the country faces yet another public health crisis with the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
