Pelham-Raad is spearheading Liberia\u2019s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, taking on the role of Global Chairperson with a clear mission: to position Liberia as a credible voice for peace, security, and international cooperation.<\/p>\n

Pelham-Raad has been at the forefront of the diplomatic effort since the campaign\u2019s official launch on September 27, 2024, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Over the past eight months, she has led a coordinated international push to mobilize support from member states and elevate Liberia\u2019s profile as a trusted partner in global peace and security. The campaign is set to close on May 27, 2025, when the final round of lobbying concludes at the UN headquarters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis campaign is about more than winning a seat,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s about projecting Liberia\u2019s story \u2014 one of resilience, transformation, and a deep commitment to peace and international cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her role as Chairperson, Pelham-Raad is managing a diplomatic strategy that spans multiple continents. She is actively engaging with regional blocs, leading Liberia\u2019s representation at multilateral forums, and amplifying the nation\u2019s credentials as a stabilizing force in West Africa and beyond.<\/p>\n

She sees the campaign as a continuation of Liberia\u2019s longstanding contribution to international diplomacy. \u201cWe\u2019ve been through conflict, we\u2019ve rebuilt, and now we\u2019re ready to contribute meaningfully to global peace and security,\u201d she said. \u201cLiberia understands what\u2019s at stake in conflict zones because we\u2019ve lived it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The campaign\u2019s central message, under Pelham-Raad\u2019s stewardship, revolves around Liberia\u2019s post-war transformation and commitment to multilateralism. Her leadership emphasizes key national priorities including peacebuilding, climate resilience, post-conflict recovery, and the inclusion of women and youth in peace processes.<\/p>\n

She has also spotlighted Liberia\u2019s rich diplomatic legacy. As the oldest republic in Africa, Liberia is a founding member of the United Nations and the African Union. The country played a pivotal role in drafting the charter of the Organization of African Unity in Monrovia and was instrumental in early peacekeeping operations in Africa.<\/p>\n

Pelham-Raad frequently references Liberia\u2019s symbolic and practical contributions to global peace \u2014 from supporting the creation of the state of Israel at the UN in 1948, to producing the only Black woman ever elected as President of the UN General Assembly, Angie Brooks Randall.<\/p>\n

In recent months, she has intensified Liberia\u2019s messaging campaign, stressing the nation\u2019s commitment to democratic values, freedom of the press, environmental protection \u2014 Liberia accounts for over 44 percent of West Africa\u2019s remaining rainforest \u2014 and its reputation as a welcoming and hospitable nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cLiberia is not just leaning on its past. We\u2019re showing that we are active, engaged, and ready to contribute solutions to today\u2019s global challenges,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Working with the Foreign Ministry, Liberia\u2019s Permanent Mission to the UN, and key diplomatic partners, Pelham-Raad has framed the campaign as a collective national effort. \u201cThis is not about one person. It\u2019s about a country that believes in peace, in cooperation, and in its own power to lead,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s confident that Liberia will be successful in securing a two-year term on the 15-member UN Security Council, beginning January 2026. As one of ten rotating non-permanent members, Liberia would participate in critical decisions on sanctions, conflict resolution, peacekeeping mandates, and the global security agenda.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur presence on the Council would reflect the voice of Nations that have overcome adversity and now seek to build peace,\u201d Ms. Pelham-Raad said. \u201cIt would be a victory not only for Liberia but for the values we share with the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
