Africa-Press – Liberia. <\/strong><\/span>Culture Ambassador, Kekura Kamara, is urging the national Legislature to swiftly ratify eight outstanding UNESCO conventions, warning that continued delay could result in irreversible loss of the country\u2019s cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters upon his return from the UNESCO Conference on Heritage Affairs held in Sivas, Turkey, Kamara emphasized that full membership in UNESCO hinges on ratifying these key international agreements. He said doing so would open the door to critical funding, technical support, and international partnerships to safeguard Liberia\u2019s cultural assets.<\/p>\n

\u201cLiberia is rich in culture and history, but without urgent action, we risk losing it,\u201d Kamara stressed. \u201cWe must act now to ratify these conventions. This is about preserving who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kamara, widely known by his stage name Malawala Balawala, said Liberia stands to benefit economically through heritage tourism, which could create jobs and generate national income. He cited historic sites like Providence Island and Ducor Palace as underutilized assets that could become economic drivers.<\/p>\n

\u201cTourism is a multi-billion-dollar industry, and Liberia has what it takes to be a major cultural destination,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He also warned that delays could lead to the deterioration of Liberia\u2019s oral traditions, dances, and historic narratives\u2014core elements of the country\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout these conventions, our intangible heritage remains vulnerable. UNESCO support ensures documentation, preservation, and global recognition,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Kamara called on lawmakers, civil society actors, artists, and educators to raise public awareness and demand action on the issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to unite across sectors and generations. Change starts with all of us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also noted that Liberia\u2019s failure to ratify the conventions has already delayed access to global academic and cultural exchanges that could elevate Liberia\u2019s standing on the international stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cInaction has consequences. Every day we wait, we risk environmental damage and cultural erosion,\u201d Kamara said.<\/p>\n
