Africa-Press – Liberia. <\/strong><\/span>The Liberian Agricultural Company LAC, is earning widespread commendation from citizens, farmers, and local authorities in Grand Bassa County for its transformative road rehabilitation program, an initiative that is redefining transportation, commerce, and safety along the once-deplorable Bassa-Gio corridor.<\/p>\n

For decades, the critical road stretch linking Buchanan through Compound Three to St. John River communities posed severe challenges.<\/p>\n

During rainy seasons, the route, particularly from Big Joe Town through Compound Three, became nearly impassable, isolating communities, disrupting trade, and putting lives at risk.<\/p>\n

However, through its ongoing Sustainable Road Repair Strategy launched in 2024, LAC has significantly reversed that reality, restoring connectivity and boosting economic activity across the region.<\/p>\n

Local Authorities Applaud LAC\u2019s Intervention<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking with FrontPageAfrica over the weekend, the Statutory Superintendent of Wee District, Morris Neasain, praised LAC\u2019s long-standing commitment to maintaining the road, even beyond what is required in its concession agreement.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be frank, had it not been for LAC, that road would have been completely deplorable, even in the dry season,\u201d Neasain said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the plantation entry through Compound Three all the way to St. John, LAC has consistently worked on that road, and the impact on our district has been overwhelmingly positive.\u201d<\/p>\n

He emphasized that LAC\u2019s efforts go beyond profit-making, describing the company as a \u201ctrue corporate citizen\u201d that continues to invest in community infrastructure despite such obligations not being explicitly stated in its concession framework.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout 85 to 90 percent of our people here will tell you LAC is doing well. The company is not just focused on profit, they are impacting lives,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Motorcyclists, Commuters Celebrate Faster Travel<\/b><\/p>\n

Motorcyclists and transport operators who ply the corridor say the improvements have dramatically reduced travel time and vehicle damage.<\/p>\n

Several riders told FrontPageAfrica that what once took hours to navigate due to deep mud, erosion, and flooding can now be completed in a matter of minutes.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore, we could spend hours from Compound 3 trying to reach Buchanan,\u201d one motorcyclist explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, in a short time, we can carry passengers and goods without stress. The road is much better, and business is improving.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another rider noted that during peak rainy seasons in previous years, entire sections around Sally Town and Dahn\u2019s Town were cut off, making movement nearly impossible.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut now, even when the rain falls, we can still pass. LAC has really helped us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Farmers See Economic Gains and Improved Livelihoods<\/p>\n

Beyond transportation, farmers say LAC\u2019s interventions are directly improving incomes and livelihoods. With better roads, produce reaches markets faster, reducing spoilage and increasing profits.<\/p>\n

Superintendent Neasain, himself a farmer, highlighted the broader economic impact, saying,<\/p>\n

\u201cRubber is now the backbone of our district\u2019s economy. Because of LAC\u2019s support, providing improved planting materials, training, and market access, some farmers can now earn between $500 to $2,000 monthly.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that LAC\u2019s introduction of grafted rubber and technical training has significantly improved farm productivity and sustainability.<\/p>\n

The partnership between LAC and local smallholders serves as a substantial economic driver. In 2025 alone, LAC purchased rubber valued at $6.45 million USD from smallholder farmers. This production further contributed $262,448 USD to the Government of Liberia, representing the 4% tax on smallholder farmer production and providing a significant boost to the national and local economy.<\/p>\n

LAC Highlights Long-Term Commitment<\/b><\/p>\n

LAC\u2019s Local Rubber Purchase Manager, Deepak Divakaran, said the company\u2019s interventions are part of a long-term vision to empower farmers and strengthen Liberia\u2019s agricultural value chain.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the errors farmers used to make on rubber trees have now changed. Today, they are quality tappers and are treating rubber as a long-term crop,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Mr. Divakaran disclosed that The Liberian Agricultural Company (LAC) continues to empower local rubber producers by supplying high-quality, superior-grade stumps. These planting materials are made available to all associated farmers through a streamlined pre-order system, ensuring that smallholders have access to the best genetic stock for sustainable yields.<\/p>\n

and in 2026 alone, the company is preparing to distribute approximately 140,000 rubber plants.<\/p>\n

He noted that while each plant costs about one dollar to produce, LAC subsidizes the cost heavily, selling them at just 13 cents to encourage ownership and proper care.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe realized that when we gave plants for free, some were wasted. Now, with a small cost, farmers value and maintain them better,\u201d he averred.<\/p>\n

He further emphasized that LAC\u2019s technical teams continuously supervise farmers, ensuring proper practices and strengthening long-term partnerships.<\/p>\n

To bolster the productivity of independent plantations, LAC\u2019s Local Rubber Purchase (LRP) Department provides farmers with detailed, written visit reports. These assessments offer actionable insights and technical guidance, specifically designed to improve on-site operational efficiency and agricultural best practices.<\/p>\n

Expanding Reach Beyond Grand Bassa<\/b><\/p>\n

According to LAC, the company\u2019s support extends beyond Grand Bassa County, reaching farmers from Bong County, Nimba County, Gbarpolu County, Grand Cape Mount County, and Margibi County, underscoring its national impact.<\/p>\n

Supervisor of LAC Nursery, Mr. Abraham Doegar, confirmed that LAC has prepared hundreds of thousands of plants, combining nursery stock and field-ready materials to meet growing demand among smallholders.<\/p>\n

A New Era for the Bassa-Gio Corridor<\/b><\/p>\n

Today, the once-neglected Bassa-Gio road corridor is fast becoming a symbol of rural transformation.<\/p>\n

Communities that were previously cut off are now reconnected. Markets are thriving.<\/p>\n

Emergency access has improved. And daily life has become safer and more predictable.<\/p>\n

For residents, the change is both practical and profound.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone here feels connected now,\u201d Jacob Flomo, a resident of Grand Bassa Compound Three noted.<\/p>\n

\u201cLAC has turned this road into a lifeline, not just for their business, but for the entire district.\u201d<\/p>\n

LAC remains committed to community development through the construction of new road networks within the New Buchanan community in Buchanan town. These infrastructure projects play a vital role in facilitating easier movement for residents and improving local commerce.<\/p>\n
