Millions of DStv viewers across Africa experienced the surprise interruption during prime time viewing on 15 April 2026 at 8pm CAT, including in the middle of live sport. Screens abruptly went black, before a countdown preceded and then a familiar silhouette appeared.<\/p>\n

It was Sir Idris Elba.<\/p>\n

Ten African nations have qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026TM\ufe0f, the most ever.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are ten of us now,\u201d Elba said in his unmistakable gravelly voice. \u201cI honestly don\u2019t care which one of us wins. I just want to see African football light up the world stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom is from Ghana, my dad is from Sierra Leone. But my heart is African,\u201d said Elba, a global superstar, who is still deeply connected to the continent.<\/p>\n

AFRICA\u2019S GREATEST WORLD CUP?<\/p>\n

The FIFA World Cup 2026TM\ufe0f, hosted across Mexico, Canada and the USA, will see Africa represented by Ghana, South Africa, Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Cape Verde, Co\u0302te d\u2019Ivoire and the DRC.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a milestone tournament, and<\/p>\n
