I write as a grieving father, a distressed nephew, and a citizen who believes that silence in the face of suffering is no longer acceptable.

This raises serious concerns about whether healthcare staff are consistently following doctors’ instructions in monitoring patients within both emergency and general care systems. There are alarming situations where attention appears diverted to social media or unrelated activities while patients suffer and, in some cases, lose their lives.

Critical questions must be asked: Are essential supplies such as blood being properly and safely managed for transfusion when needed? Are patients receiving the correct medication on time, or are substitutions being made that may compromise outcomes? While doctors may be working tirelessly, limited supervision and coordination can result in preventable loss of life.

It is also important to recognize that nurses are often reporting cases to doctors, yet miscommunication or misinterpretation within the medical system can create serious risks. Not everyone wearing white coats is a doctor, and in many cases, patients become confused about who is truly responsible for their care. In healthcare, assumptions are dangerous—every mistake can become a life-threatening situation.

Another major challenge is transportation. Many doctors are unable to respond promptly due to inadequate transport systems. This delays emergency response and affects survival outcomes.

We must urgently rethink and strengthen the healthcare system if we truly intend to save lives. Practical solutions must be considered, including improving emergency mobility—such as providing dedicated transport options for doctors, including motorcycles or other rapid-response systems—to ensure quicker access to patients in critical condition.

This is why Liberia must fix its healthcare system now

My uncle has been fighting for his life since March 29, 2026. He was admitted through the Emergency Ward of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital at approximately 2:00 PM after suffering serious injuries, including a broken leg and head trauma. What followed, according to my direct observation and experience as the family member responsible for his care, was 11 days of uncertainty, distress, and what I believe to be inadequate medical attention, poor communication, and systemic breakdown in patient care.

This experience has reopened wounds that my family is still struggling to heal. I observed an extended period of 11 days without proper treatment, instead of nine days as previously stated. I also noted, through background accounts, that other patients cried for help without receiving timely support from healthcare workers to meet their needs.

In September 2025, we lost our beloved son, Campbell Rogers. His passing followed what we experienced as prolonged delays, inconsistent communication, and inadequate response during his treatment at the same institution. That loss is a permanent scar on our family. We were told that care was being provided. We were given hope. But in the end, we lost him.

Now, only months later, I find myself in a situation that feels painfully similar. At John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, my uncle spent approximately 11 days under care. During that period, I observed what I believe to be serious gaps in basic patient management. For over nine days, his wounds were not properly cleaned. Only one bandage was applied over an extended period. In any functioning healthcare system, wound management is not optional—it is essential. It is the difference between recovery and deterioration.

These are not small administrative oversights. They are fundamental failures in patient care.

Even more troubling was the breakdown in communication between hospital staff and family members. As someone fully responsible for all medical expenses, I made repeated attempts to understand my uncle’s condition and treatment plan. On multiple occasions, I was dismissed and told, “I am not here to answer your questions. Ask the doctor.”

While I respect professional boundaries in medicine, families in crisis cannot be left in the dark. Basic communication is not a luxury—it is part of care.

In addition, even immediate family members attempting to seek information were reportedly met with hostility. My uncle’s son and aunt were shouted at when they sought updates. In moments where compassion should define every interaction, we experienced frustration, silence, and emotional distress.

This is not the standard any patient or family should endure.

A Disturbing Breakdown in Continuity of Care

The situation became even more troubling when we made the decision to transfer my uncle to another medical facility. At that point, we expected continuity—clear documentation, proper handover notes, and access to medications that had already been paid for.

Instead, we were met with serious challenges.

We were not provided with clear or complete medical records. Medications that had been fully paid for were not released. This meant that when we arrived at the new hospital, we had to begin treatment from scratch, without proper history, without continuity, and without clarity on what had already been done.

We paid for care. We paid for medication. Yet we left without either in hand.

This raises serious ethical and systemic questions. A hospital is not just a place of treatment; it is a custodian of life-saving information. When that chain is broken, patients suffer.

A Stark Contrast in Care After Transfer

When my uncle was transferred, the difference in care was immediate and undeniable. At the new facility, he received structured attention, comprehensive examinations, and X-rays. For the first time since his initial admission, we received clear explanations of his condition, delivered in a professional and understandable manner.

That contrast alone raises urgent questions about consistency in standards of care across facilities in Liberia.

At one point during his treatment at JFK Hospital, we were told that amputation was the only viable option. My uncle, in tears, pleaded not to lose his leg. I am not a medical professional, and I do not pretend to understand every clinical decision. However, I strongly believe that irreversible outcomes must be preceded by consistent treatment, proper documentation, and transparent communication with families.

Without those elements, families are left in confusion at the most critical moments of their lives.

The Weight of a Centralized System

It is important to recognize a broader reality: Liberia’s healthcare system is heavily centralized. Most complex cases are referred to Monrovia, and particularly to JFK Hospital. This places enormous pressure on one institution and its staff.

I do not ignore this reality. I acknowledge that many healthcare professionals are working under extremely difficult conditions. I have no doubt that many are dedicated, overworked, and doing their best within a strained system.

But pressure does not excuse breakdowns in care.

When families are forced to purchase basic supplies such as gloves, bandages, and antiseptics from outside the hospital, something is fundamentally wrong. When patients go days without consistent wound care, something is wrong. When families cannot access medical records or clear explanations, something is wrong.

These are not expectations of luxury. They are expectations of dignity.

A Pattern That Cannot Be Ignored

For my family, this is not an isolated incident. It is part of a painful pattern. We lost our son in 2025 under circumstances that still haunt us. We are now watching our uncle fight for his life in 2026 under conditions that raise similar concerns.

I am left asking: how many families must experience this before meaningful reform takes place? How many stories remain untold? How many lives are affected in silence? How many outcomes could be different if systems were stronger, communication clearer, and accountability more consistent? These are not accusations made lightly. They are questions born from lived experience.

Why Reform Must Be Immediate

Liberia cannot afford to delay healthcare reform any longer. The consequences are too severe, and the human cost is too high. Based on what I have experienced, I strongly call for the establishment of a National Healthcare Task Force with the authority to:

Inspect hospitals regularly

Investigate complaints of negligence

Enforce patient care standards

Review documentation and discharge procedures

Hold institutions and individuals accountable where necessary

This body must be independent, transparent, and empowered to act without interference.

In addition, there must be mandatory continuous training and re-certification for healthcare workers, focusing on:

Ethical care and patient dignity

Communication with families in crisis

Proper medical documentation and reporting

Safe medication administration practices

Healthcare is not only about treatment—it is about trust. And trust depends on consistency.

We must also improve hospital infrastructure to include safe and dignified spaces for families, recognizing that in our cultural and social reality, families are deeply involved in patient care. They should not be treated as outsiders during emergencies.

Furthermore, we must strengthen systems for medical records management and inter-hospital transfers, ensuring that no patient loses critical history when moving between facilities.

Finally, Liberia must seriously consider decentralizing specialized healthcare services, so that no single hospital is overwhelmed beyond capacity. A system that relies too heavily on one institution is a system under risk.

A National Moment of Reflection

This is not just about my uncle. It is not just about my son. It is about every Liberian who has ever walked into a hospital with hope and uncertainty.

I have seen dedicated doctors and nurses working under immense pressure. I respect their service deeply. But I have also seen gaps in systems, communication failures, and inconsistencies that demand urgent attention.

We must be honest enough to say that good people cannot succeed in broken systems without support.

We must also be brave enough to fix what is broken. Like blood, transportation, medication, patient monitoring, and healthcare follow doctors’ interventions or instructions. Implementing or supervising patient care involves addressing confusion at the hospital’s point of entry. When hospital staff pretend everything is fine, especially when officials visit, it creates a false impression. Everything may seem to be in order, but this is misleading. You need to acknowledge the issues and ask about the negative factors affecting the hospital. How do you want proper change to occur?

Conclusion: The Time to Act Is Now

My son is gone. My uncle is still fighting.

These two truths define my urgency. They are the reason I can no longer remain silent. Liberia must fix its healthcare system now—not tomorrow, not next year, but now.

Because every delay has consequences. Every silence has a cost. And every failure has a human face. Behind every hospital bed is a family hoping, praying, and waiting for care that must never be compromised. We owe it to them—and to ourselves—to do better. We must think beyond the current crisis and act decisively to protect lives.

About the author:

Bill Rogers is a distinguished health, wellness, and rehabilitation professional with over 12 years of multidisciplinary experience spanning higher education, therapeutic rehabilitation, and youth behavioral health.

Holds a Master’s in Sports, Recreation & Fitness Administration and multiple certifications in kinesiology, rehabilitation, and youth safety.
