La de\u0301tection a eu lieu dans un acce\u0301le\u0301rateur de particules du Riken, ce\u0301le\u0300bre institut de recherche nucle\u0301aire a\u0300 Wako\u0302, au Japon. Le noyau de O-28 se compose de 8 protons, et de 20 neutrons. Deux chiffres qui re\u0301sonnent d\u2019une manie\u0300re particulie\u0300re aux oreilles des physiciens nucle\u0301aires, car cela fait de l\u2019oxyge\u0300ne-28 un noyau doublement \u201cmagique\u201d. En tout cas en the\u0301orie&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Un noyau est dit magique lorsqu\u2019il contient un nombre de protons ou de neutrons (des nucle\u0301ons) particulier : 2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82 ou 126. Si l\u2019on se repre\u0301sente un noyau comme un oignon compose\u0301 de plusieurs couches empile\u0301es d\u2019e\u0301paisseur variable, ils correspondent au nombre maximal de nucle\u0301ons que l\u2019on peut disposer sur une couche. L\u2019oxyge\u0300ne-28, avec ses 8 protons et ses 20 neutrons, est donc bien doublement magique sur le papier. Cette structure confe\u0300re normalement une grande stabilite\u0301 au noyau en question. C\u2019est la\u0300 que cela se complique, car la dure\u0301e de vie de O-28 n\u2019est que de l\u2019ordre de 10^-22 seconde. Alors, magique ou pas ? La question est pose\u0301e&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><b>Un noyau trop fugace pour e\u0302tre \u201cvu\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>En attendant, cette observation est de\u0301ja\u0300 un exploit. \u201cCela fait plus de trente ans que l\u2019on tente de voir cet isotope, explique a\u0300 Sciences et Avenir Olivier Sorlin, physicien au Ganil (le Grand acce\u0301le\u0301rateur national d\u2019ions lourds) de Caen, et cosignataire de l\u2019e\u0301tude. Nous l\u2019avons notamment cherche\u0301 ici, au Ganil, sans succe\u0300s. Nous espe\u0301rions le voir directement, parce qu\u2019on le croyait d\u2019une dure\u0301e de vie suffisamment longue pour l\u2019observer. Comme il nous e\u0301chappait, nous en avons de\u0301duit qu\u2019il ne l\u2019e\u0301tait pas, ce que confirme sa tre\u0300s courte dure\u0301e de vie. A peine forme\u0301, il se de\u0301sinte\u0300gre en un noyau d\u2019oxyge\u0300ne-24, et 4 neutrons&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Les chercheurs du Riken n\u2019ont ainsi pas directement observe\u0301 le fameux isotope, mais ils ont de\u0301duit sa pre\u0301sence a\u0300 partir des trajectoires et de l\u2019e\u0301nergie de l\u2019oxyge\u0300ne-24 et des neutrons e\u0301mis lors de sa de\u0301sinte\u0301gration. \u201cLa traque de l\u2019oxyge\u0300ne-24 a e\u0301te\u0301 longue car la de\u0301tection simultane\u0301e de ces quatre neutrons est de\u0301licate : ce sont des particules qui laissent peu de traces lors de leur passage dans la matie\u0300re et sont diffuse\u0301s dans de multiples directions\u201d, souligne Olivier Sorlin. La production de l\u2019O-28 est aussi toute une aventure. Les chercheurs ont utilise\u0301 un faisceau de calcium-48 dirige\u0301e une cible de be\u0301ryllium. La collision a ge\u0301ne\u0301re\u0301 une collection d\u2019atomes plus le\u0301gers, dont le fluor-29 (9 protons et 20 neutrons), produit a\u0300 presque la moitie\u0301 de la vitesse de la lumie\u0300re. Cet isotope du fluor a ensuite e\u0301te\u0301 se\u0301lectionne\u0301 et a bombarde\u0301 une cible d\u2019hydroge\u0300ne liquide, le transformant ainsi en vol en oxyge\u0300ne-28 (8 protons donc, et 20 neutrons) lorsqu\u2019un proton du Fluor-29 entre en collision avec un proton de la cible d\u2019hydroge\u0300ne.<\/p>\n<p>Autant de prouesses expe\u0301rimentales pour finalement observer un noyau que l\u2019on pensait magique, et qui ne l\u2019est peut-e\u0302tre pas tant que cela. \u201cCela confirme ce dont on se doutait : le noyau n\u2019est pas lie\u0301. L\u2019interaction forte, responsable de la cohe\u0301sion du noyau, peine a\u0300 retenir les neutrons des couches les plus externes. C\u2019est une premie\u0300re remise en cause de sa \u00ab magicite\u0301 \u00bb. Une manie\u0300re plus probante encore de tester son caracte\u0300re magique serait de de\u0301terminer l\u2019e\u0301nergie qu\u2019il faut pour l\u2019exciter, elle devrait e\u0302tre faible si le noyau n\u2019est pas magique. Cependant, on ne connait pour l\u2019instant que l\u2019e\u0301nergie de son e\u0301tat fondamental.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Une fene\u0302tre ouverte sur les e\u0301toiles a\u0300 neutrons<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Derrie\u0300re ces recherches autour des noyaux magiques, il s\u2019agit pour les chercheurs de mieux comprendre l\u2019interaction forte, au c\u0153ur de l\u2019e\u0301difice nucle\u0301aire. \u201cC\u2019est la plus me\u0301connue des quatre grandes forces de la physique. Quelles sont ces diffe\u0301rentes composantes ? Jusqu\u2019a\u0300 combien de nucle\u0301ons peut-on ainsi assembler gra\u0302ce a\u0300 elle ? s\u2019interroge ainsi Olivier Sorlin. L\u2019inte\u0301re\u0302t du sujet de\u0301passe la physique microscopique au niveau du noyau atomique pour rejoindre l\u2019astrophysique et l\u2019abondance des e\u0301le\u0301ments chimiques produits dans l\u2019Univers par ces forces. La fusion de deux e\u0301toiles a\u0300 neutrons forme beaucoup d\u2019atomes tre\u0300s lourds et tre\u0300s riches en neutrons qui se de\u0301sinte\u0300grent pour produire les e\u0301le\u0301ments lourds stables qui existent sur Terre.
