Government admits desks’ shortage

Africa-PressMalawi. Education Minister Agnes NyaLonje has said the government is committed to addressing the problem of shortage of learning materials such as desks in primary and secondary schools.

NyaLonje said this in Parliament Monday when she presented a report titled ‘Improving the Learning Environment Through Provision of Desks’. She said statistics indicate that there are 457,762 desks in primary schools and 139,527 single-seater desks and 52,235 double-seater desks in secondary schools in the country.

“Considering the current enrolments of over 5.3 million learners in primary and over 400,000 learners in secondary schools, these figures underscore the acute shortage of desks in our schools,” NyaLonje said.

Mangochi Central Constituency parliamentarian Victoria Kingstone said it would be critical for the Ministry of Education to use technical college graduates to address challenges such as the shortage of desks in public schools.
