Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi Boxing Association (MABA) on Saturday, February 12, 2022 conducted elections at Kamuzu Institute of Sports in Lilongwe to elect new office bearers for the central region.
Twenty one delegates from different boxing clubs in the region including Kamuzu Barracks, Meta Boxing Academy, Chilinde boxing were present to vote for their candidates.
Nehru Maya was voted as the new Chairman after defeating the incumbent James Mkwanda by fifteen votes to six. Spannox Mhango is the new Vice Chairman who went unopposed after the other candidate Patrick Malimero failed to turn up.
Alex Sakala who has been serving as the acting general Secretary retained the position unopposed, Sakala will be deputized by Edwin Mbewe who also went unopposed.
The new treasurer is Moreen Phiri who has been in the sport for some years as a boxer. Daudi Shaibu, the Malawi Boxing Association National General Secretary who presided over the elections, described the whole process as free and fair.
“We are happy and very excited that today we have established the new committee in the region, we are expecting them to work so tirelessly as they have to conduct games while following AIBA rules and regulations at the same time they have to go in the districts to establish clubs and stage bouts so that we nurture the talent for National and International tournaments.
“The committee has to engage themselves into resource mobilization for them to run the affairs. We have asked them to promote the Welfare of boxers, Coaches,Committee, the referees and Judges as well”, Shaibu explained.
In his acceptance remarks the newly elected Chairman Nehru Maya assured the National Committee that his committee will run the affairs in the professional manner saying he is going to use the experience and knowledge he has for the sport.
“I started doing boxing activities as early as 1996,I am a ring master in the country. My committee will produce as many boxers as we can.
“Let me appeal to the clubs and my fellow Executive Committee Members to let love lead and the Sport win,” he added. The newly elected office bearers will be in power for three years.
