Africa-Press – Malawi. The main Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has distanced itself from the appointment of a Shadow Cabinet presented by Kondwani Nankhumwa in August house. The party’s Administrative Secretary, Francis Mphepo, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, February 13, 2022.
According the the statement, the party said it appointed its Parliamentary Spokespersons on specific matters such as Economic, Legal Affairs, Health, Agriculture, among others but not a Shadow Cabinet as announced by Nankhumwa.
Mphepo revealed that the DPP leadership was not consulted in the appointment of the said Shadow Cabinet, adding that those appointed in the Shadow Cabinet have no Authority whatsoever to speak on behalf of the party in the National Assembly.
Mphepo added that DPP believes that a Shadow Cabinet serves no purpose in a Hybrid Government System of Presidential and Parliamentary System in Malawi. He however, said the party will only present its position on specific matters in the National Assembly through its Parliamentary Spokespersons.
On Friday, Nankhumwa announced the Shadow Cabinet that Incorporated DPP, UDF and AFORD members, saying appointed members would be providing guidance to respective current position holders in the Tonse-led government .
