Africa-Press – Malawi. Blantyre Water Board (BWB) says it has lost almost 60 percent of its Mudi Dam water storage capacity due to heavy siltation. This is a result of wanton cutting down of trees around the Mudi Dam water catchment area.
BWB Laboratory Technician Precious Puzani said this was negatively affecting the quality and quantity of water supplied to Blantyre residents. He said this on Saturday when Mudi Sacco planted trees at the Mudi catchment area to help in conserving the dam.
“Re-planting trees around Mudi catchment area and Bringing back vegetation cover will improve the quality of water, where the board will not use a lot of chemicals for water purification,” Puzani said.
Mudi Sacco General Manager Triza Magreta promised that the Sacco would make sure the tree seedlings being planted are looked after until they grow. “Water is life. We want to play our part in contributing to the restoration of the environment by taking care and looking after the trees we have planted as corporate citizens,” Magreta said. BWB targets to plant 60,000 trees during the plating season this year.
