Blantyre topping latest Malawi’s high HIV prevalence rate

Africa-Press – Malawi. Blantyre is continuing to top the list of districts in Malawi with high HIV and AIDS prevalence rate. Head of Coordination at National Aids Commission (NAC)Tione Chilemba told MIJ radio that the current district’s HIV prevalence rate is almost 20 percent.

“Half of the population, are girls in between the age of 14 to 24, a development Chilemba has attributed to poverty influenced by urbanization.

“National level, the country has done well in reducing the prevalence rate to 8.6 percent, from 20 percent, that was registered some ten years ago,” says Chilemba.

Deputy Mayor for Blantyre City Funny Kanojerera has disclosed that they have been doubling their efforts aimed taming rising urbanization from neighboring districts of Chiradzulu, Thyolo and Mulanje.
