Africa-Press – Malawi. Giants Mighty Wanderers were forced to relocate to Mpira Stadium from Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre over unpaid K5 million debt dating back to 2017, Times Sport can reveal.
Wanderers’ move to Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre, was met with eyebrows as some speculated that it had to do with minimising management costs.
Contrary to speculation, Kamuzu Stadium Manager Ireen Mkoko revealed that Wanderers were kicked out of their preferred venue due to unpaid debt. “We chased them after bills accumulated to over K5 million,” she said. However, Mkoko said Wanderers would be welcomed back if they the bill.
“We have now opened discussions over new payment mode and they are willing to start servicing the bill. However, we have advised them to write a commitment letter to that effect before we admit them back,” Mkoko said.
Wanderers Commercialisation Chairperson Clement Stambuli asked the Nomads family not to despair, saying the bill would be settled since there was peace and order at the team.
“Our home ground is Kamuzu Stadium but, like any other institution, we have debt which is manageable. You must appreciate that we are talking of a 2021 entity being haunted by liabilities of 2017. This alone must tell you how much work we have and, indeed, we can’t sort, such problems overnight,” he said.
Stambuli said they were grateful to Kamuzu Stadium management for understanding the team’s situation. “We met with Kamuzu Stadium and we pledged to service the debt,” Stambuli said.
Wanderers have played two games at Mpira Stadium management including their goalless draw against Mighty Tigers on Sunday. Last week, Nomads beat TN Stars 2-1 at Mpira Stadium. They last played at Kamuzu Stadium when they lost to Nyasa Big Bullets 2-1 in a TNM Super League opener last month.
