Africa-Press – Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera today met with visiting British Minister for Africa Vicky Ford at Kamuzu Palace where, among other things, they discussed the ongoing Russia- Ukraine war and other areas of cooperation.

Ford, in an interview, hailed Chakwera’s stance on the Russian invasion, saying any hostility on civilians should be condemned. She said Malawi, as a member of the Commonwealth and United Nations Human Rights Council, had an important role to play in fostering peace.

“President Chakwera has been strong in saying it is wrong to breach international law, it is wrong for a big country to go and invade their neighbours and cause this terrible tragedy on civilians. So, we talked about how bad a president would be if he let or tolerated such bullish characters,” Ford said.

She said the Russia-Ukraine war was an important item on their agenda following events of terror happening in Mozambique and Chakwera’s role in ensuring peace and stability as Chairperson for the Southern African Development Community.

Ford then said there was a need for nations to unite and stand up for the sovereignty of nations and the peace as one way of upholding people’s rights.

On good governance, Ford said the British government was impressed with the President’s strong stance on corruption, saying, as a way of supporting his government, she would encourage honest investment in Malawi by British citizens.

“We want to encourage British investors to come into Malawi. Investments that are honest, reliable and transparent, especially now when we want to help in the creation of job opportunities for Malawians,” she said.
