Africa-Press – Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera was on Friday, morning April 29, 2022 highly impressed with fish farming undertaken by a fish farming cooperative composed of mainly women fish farmers in Mzimba. President Chakwera and Madam Monica Chakwera toured fish farming ponds in Chauluma Village, Chief Kampingo Sibande’s area in the district.
Accompanied by minister of Agriculture Lobin Lowe and other government officials, President Chakwera wondered if the delicious looking big fish were from the pond that was in front of him or was fished out of the lake.
But farmer, Laness Kaunda said all the fish were from her ponds. She disclosed that out of seven fish ponds she harvests five tonnes yearly. However, Kaunda said the ponds have potential of 10 tonnes of fish per year.
She told the President that one of the challenges facing include insufficient of feeds for the fish. Kaunda said the farmers import the feed from Zambia which is very expensive.
She added that the taste of pond fish is not different from those from the lake saying is ready to supply to the market. President Chakwera therefore bought some of the fish from the farmer. This comes as the government is encouraging farmers to diversify farming in the wake of the smoky future of tobacco, the country’s economic backbone.
