Africa-Press – Malawi. In a sudden turn of events, Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has rescheduled the Lilongwe derby involving Silver Strikers and Civil Service United to this coming Saturday at Silver Stadium.
Sulom postponed the derby at the eleventh hour after receiving communication that Silver had contributed more than three players to the Malawi National Football Team before the side left for Cosafa Cup underway in South Africa. Sulom General Secretary Williams Banda said they followed rules and regulations before rescheduling the match.
“If you check the list of players that are with the Flames, you would find that only three players from Silver are there. Sulom rules and regulations indicate that a team should contribute more than three players, meaning that Silver can play Super League matches,” Banda said in reference to the Bankers’ trio of left-back Mark Fodya, midfielder Nixon Mwase and forward Gasten Maxwell Phodo which is in the Flames squad.
Ironically, some Silver players who were earmarked for the trip missed it due to either form or self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus.
Silver Chief Executive Officer Thokozani Chimbali confirmed having contributed three players to the national team. Civil Team Manager Gabriel Chirwa said they were ready to play Silver as part of their league assignment.
“We will be ready for everything. We have received the fixture and it is time to prepare,” Chirwa said.
The development came after Sulom also postponed the Blantyre derby between Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers after both teams contributed more than three players to the national team.
