Africa-Press – Malawi. Mukuru, Africa’s leading remittances-focused fintech, has offered support by donating 5 million Kwacha to the Malawi Red Cross Society for relief efforts after tropical cyclone Ana hit the country last week.
The cyclone, reported as one of the worst of its kind to hit Malawi, caused damage to infrastructure and devastation to thousands of people across disaster-hit areas such as Nsanje, Chikwawa, Zomba, Phalombe, Mwanza and Mulanje.
Charles Phiri, Malawi Country Manager at Mukuru, says, “We reached out to sources on the ground as soon as we were alerted to the situation. As a business, we are committed to supporting the communities in Malawi, not only when it comes to the services we provide, but especially when there is a greater need for businesses like ours to assist.”
There has also been an appeal from President Chakwera for humanitarian assistance from various entities, including the local private sector. Since Ana hit, The Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) has been assisting with search and rescue, attending to the basic needs and providing Covid-19 preventative supplies to those evacuated from the disaster areas. MRCS has set up 26 camps in six districts to assist with feeding, shelter and warmth.
“Malawi Red Cross is happy to receive this timely and valuable donation from Mukuru to support the people that were affected by floods due to the tropical storm. Mukuru is a true friend of the Malawian people as this is not the first time they have supported vulnerable communities, says McBain Kanogodza, Secretary-General for Malawi Red Cross Society.
“They supported us during the 2019 floods, and this year they are the first company to partner with us in reaching out to the affected communities. We are grateful for the timely donation which will change the lives of those affected,” says Kanogodza.
“Mukuru is about more than just money transfers – we are a business with a heart for people. Our roots run deep into Africa, serving over 10 million customers across the continent, with a large proportion being Malawian. We are continuously looking at ways to empower and support our customers, their families and immediate communities,” concludes Phiri.
