Africa-Press – Malawi. Stakeholders in the country have come together to fight against violation of human rights by law enforcers in the country. Independent Complaints Commission (ICC) made the remarks following the increase in cases on human rights violations by police officers across Malawi.

The remarks comes amid recent revelations that there are about 100 recorded cases of brutality by law enforcers on Malawians. The commission said so far, 50 cases are still under investigations and 8 cases were already reviewed.

Commenting on the matter, Center for Human Rights Education, Advice Assistance (CHREAA) Executive Director, Victor Mhango said many cases of rights violations by police officers die under wraps.

Joseph Fologonya, a victim of police assault from Chileka in Blantyre in his remarks said in January 2021, he was in custody for four days after being reported to the police that they are having misunderstandings with his wife over family issues.

The victim who is now in the hands of CHREAA said police officers harshly beat him using a panga knife up until he fainted and poured him cold water before they grabbed MK300,000 from him.

“After all this I was granted bail without telling me what I committed”, added Fologonya. Meanwhile, CHREAA has launched a campaign on social justice pertaining to human rights in Malawi
