Chakwera adheres to austerity measures, cancels Zambia AU summit trip

Africa-Press – Malawi. In a bid to fulfill his promises of limiting government expenditure on foreign trips, President Lazarus Chakwera has canceled his planned trip to attend the African Union ( AU) Summit scheduled to take place in Zambia on July 17, 2022.

According to statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs made available to Maravi Post, President Chakwera was expected to attend the Summit as SADC Chairperson but instead designated Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nancy Tembo, to represent him in the meeting.

The summit which is expected to be attended by over 4,000 delegates, including 12 Heads of State will be held at the newly-built Kenneth Kaunda International Conference Centre, in Lusaka, Zambia.

It will among other issues review progress on the AU’s Agenda 2063, regional integration and the implementation of this year’s AU theme on nutrition. On May 31, 2022, President Chakwera announced his cost cutting measures so as to reduce government expenditures amidst the county’s economic challenges.

One of them was that no public officer should be allowed to undertake three foreign trips in a month. Chakwera has therefore, seen adheres to his austerity measures by cancelling several important foreign trips two being of OPEC in Australia and Common Wealth in Rwanda where MK260 million was saved.
