MACRA seals Ampex courier offices over illegal operations, 19 more on radar

Africa-Press – Malawi. The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) on Thursday July 14, 2022 sealed off Ampex Limited offices in Blantyre and Lilongwe for allegedly operating its courier services illegally. The regulatory body also arrested the courier’s Division Manager and the accountant on the issue.

MACRA Director General Daud Suleiman confirmed this in a statement citing reasons being failure by the courier to settle its outstanding license fee and levies to MK29, 579, 418.08 as well as paying US$ 5,000 renewal fees.

Suleiman said ” MACRA Board, at its meeting held at on July 14, 2022, approved the renewal of Ampex Domestic Courier services license subject to Ampex settling its outstanding license fee and levies amounting to MK29, 579, 418. 08 as well as paying US$ 5000 renewal fees.

” Ampex was advised not to operate courier services until they obtain a valid courier license,”. He added” MACRA has taken this action after its investigations revealed that Ampex was still operating courier services contrary to its directive.”

He went on to remind the general public that operating a courier or any other communications services business without a valid license issued by MACRA is illegal under section 31 and 122 of the communications Act cap 68:01 of the laws of Malawi and that any person found engaging in such illegal acts commits offense.

Prior to this, the regulatory body also pounced on 19 private broadcasters including Zodiak Broadcasting Station ( ZBS) over unpaid licence fees balances.

Established in 1988, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) is a statutory body under the Communications Act, which is mandated to regulate the provision of services in the communications sector in Malawi, comprising telecommunications, posts and broadcasting.
