Africa-Press – Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera has appointed Merlyne Nachulu Yolamu as Inspector General (IG) of the Police to replace George Kainja who was fired in June this year. Her appointment, which is in line Section 154 (2) of Malawi’s Constitution, is subject to confirmation by Parliament.

If Yolamu is confirmed in her position, she will become the first female Inspector General of the Police, although Mary Nangwale was similarly appointed to the position in April 2005, but Malawi Parliament rejected her.

She joins a cadre of women serving the country in key positions including the Director General of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Martha Chizuma, the Ombudsman, Grace Malera, Director General of Financial Intelligence Authority Malawi, Jean Priminta and Secretary to the President and Cabinet Zamba.
