Africa-Press – Malawi. Amidst high cost of living, President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse government through Ministry of Finance has with immediate effect approved the adjustment of selling price of Maize.
This has been confirmed in letter signed by the Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture Sandram Maweru and addressed to the ADMARC General Manager Jerome Chim’gonda, which indicates MK300 per kilogram as a new price from the previous MK205 per kilogram.
“I wish to bring to your attention that the Ministry of Finance has approved the adjustment of the selling price of maize from K205 to K300 per kilogram with immediate effect.
“You are therefore, requested to bring this to attention of all your members of staff to adhere to this price whenever you are selling maize across the country, ” reads the letter in part.
It adds, “May I also request that you ensure that maize is sold to households and at no time should it be sold in bulk to vendors.” However, the new price means that Malawians will now have to spend MK15,000 to access a 50 kilogram bag of the staple food.
Speaking at one of crop inspection tours in Lilongwe few months ago, Chakwera assured Malawians that the country is still food secured despite a drop in maize production from 4.5 million metric tones last year to 3.8 million metric tones this year.
