Mzuzu City Mayor Gift Nyirenda in cell till Friday for bail on defilement charges

Africa-Press – Malawi. Mzuzu City Mayor Gift Nyirenda who is in Police custody on allegation that he had been defiling his 14-year-old niece is expected to spend three more days in cooler after a Magistrate court on Monday August 15,2022 reserved a bail ruling to Friday August 19,2022.

According to state prosecutor Moja Phiri, the case adjournment is to allow the court conduct further investigations on the matter. Phiri also expressed fear that if the suspect granted bail will tamper with investigations, recalling a case involving former Mzuzu city councilor who bolted after being granted a court bail.

Nyirenda, who pleaded no guilty to the charge of defilement levelled against him on Monday August 15, 2022, applied for bail through his lawyer Davie Lameck to allow him attend the case from his home.

The lawyer told the court that the suspect being a high profile in the society cannot jump bail conditions if granted. He further argued that the suspect has his permanent home in Mzuzu, hence deserves to be granted bail. Nyirenda was arrested on Saturday August 13,2022 at his residence in Mzuzu in connection to the above mentioned allegation.
