Africa-Press – Malawi. Paramount Chief Mbelwa of Mzimba has asked President Lazarus Chakwera to sort out chiefs’ honoraria allowances observing that every week chiefs are being elevated while the issue of honoraria is still unresolved.
Mbelwa claimed that some chiefs are being promoted without the knowledge of Senior Chiefs advising the president that senior chiefs are the ones who writes recommendation to the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) that such chief deserve promotions.
Speaking during the Umthetho Cultural Festival held at the foot of Hora mountain in Mzimba on Saturday, Paramount Mbelwa asked President Chakwera to address the honoraria issue in as soon as yesterday saying if left unchecked it will derail development projects.
“The chief write a letter for promotion to your office, tomorrow you hear that such chief has been promoted, this is not good,’’ said Mbelwa. Bwalo la Chewa Foundation (BOLA-CEFO) described Umthetho Cultural Festival of the Ngoni people as the best.
The grouping observes that it a great lesson to all the Chewa leaders who are misleading fellow Chewas in Malawi taking them to Zambia for cultural festivities that can be held in their own soils. Chakwera described the Umthetho Cultural Festival as enlightening and educative on the importance of transmitting social values across generations.
