Africa-Press – Malawi. The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has asked Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to remove the name of Andrew Mpesi on the position of Chief elections officer.
In a press statement dated September 2, 2022, signed by the party’s director of legal affairs Charles Mhango, DPP feels Mpesi is compromised and has potential of helping rigging the next elections in favor of MCP and its leadership.
“His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has a towering influence over Mr. Andrew Mpesi, thereby cannot,… and will never be seen to perform his duties independently of His Excellency Dr Chakwera and the MCP,” reads part of the statement. MEC publicist Sangwani Mwafulirwa has promised to react on the statement soon. Mpesi replaces Sam Alufanindika who resigned last year.
