Africa-Press – Malawi. BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Parliamentary Committee on Health says it is concerned that despite being a dry season, cholera continues to spread at an alarming rate in the country.

The committee’s chairperson Matthews Ngwale on Sunday September 11, 2022 disclosed that will be a meeting between the committee and the Ministry of Health to discuss on what should be done to effectively control the situation.

Commenting on the same, Health expert Maureen Chirwa said that there is need for health officials to go in the communities and teach people on behavior change so as to contain further spread of the disease.

According to daily cholera updates from the Ministry of Health, as of September 11, 2022, cumulatively, Malawi has recorded 87,936 cases including 2,679 deaths, of which fatality rate stands at 3.05%.

Cholera is an extremely virulent disease that can cause severe acute watery diarrhoea. The disease takes between 12 hours and 5 days for a person to show symptoms after ingesting contaminated food or water. It affects both children and adults and can kill within hours if untreated.
