Africa-Press – Malawi. Some months ago, red hot forward Tabitha Chawinga could only dream of featuring in a Milan derby as she was still playing for her parent club in China.
However, the gods smiled for the Scorchers captain as she completed a one-year loan deal from Chinese Women’s Super League defending champions Wuhan Jiangda to Inter Milan Ladies.
Now, the prolific goal poacher is ready to feature in her first ever Milan derby as her side Inter Milan face arch-rivals AC Milan this afternoon. Inter Women lead the Italian Serie A with 13 points from five matches, just one point above second-placed Roma.
In an interview Friday from Italy, Tabitha said she is geared for the biggest fixture in women’s football. “I have always dreamed of playing in this fixture. I am looking forward to it. Everything is in the hands of God,” Tabitha said.
The Malawian striker heads into the derby with morale high after she was named Serie A women player of the month for September. She was also named African best player in Europe last month.
Tabitha has started her career in Italy on a high having scored four goals in five matches. She is currently third on scorers’ chart just one goal behind joint leaders Cristiana Girelli and Elisa Polli.
Meanwhile, Scorchers Coach Lovemore Fazili believed Tabitha will shine in Milan derby. “She is a top player and she knows how to handle pressure in big matches. I am confident that she will be an important player against AC Milan,” Fazili said.
Tabitha featured for Malawi during the 2022 Hollywoodbets Cosafa Cup in Port Elizabeth in South Africa. She scored three goals in two matches. The former DD Sunshine, Tabitha won the golden boot award thrice in five years including in her debut season in which she scored 17 goals, beating Nigerian Ashisat Oshoala.
