Africa-Press – Malawi. Democratic Progress Party (DPP) secretary general Grezelder Jeffrey has questioned the party’s decision to endorse demonstrations organised by Citizens Against Impunity, which wants the government to address socio-economic challenges besetting the country.
The DPP, in a statement released on October 25 2022 and signed by administrative secretary Francis Mphepo, argued that corruption, impunity and incompetence on part of the Lazarus Chakwera administration are some of the factors that moved it to endorse the protests.
But speaking in a separate interview, Jeffrey said the party did not meet to discuss the issue at hand. Jeffrey said, while the right to hold demonstrations is sacrosanct, party decisions are supposed to be unanimous.
“I cannot remember when my president [Peter Mutharika] invited us to a meeting at which we discussed the issue of endorsing the demonstrations. I am not even aware that I instructed the administrative secretary to release a statement on the matter.
“These anomalies must be avoided because I am the secretary general of the party and I cannot be bypassed and I think my president was also bypassed because I just came across the statement on social media,” Jeffrey said.
When contacted, Mphepo could not be drawn to comment on the issue. “I don’t comment on things like this please. Thank you,” he said. Recently, the quasi-religious group Public Affairs Committee said dialogue was key to addressing challenges rocking the country.
The demonstrations, scheduled for tomorrow, are being led by Sylvester Namiwa of Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative, Bon Kalindo and social media influencer Joshua Chisa Mbele.
